Whilst everything is stripped do the pump, belts, etc I want to tidy up brackets, fasteners, aluminium parts along the way.

I am going to get the cam cover powder coated, but what is best way to tackle aluminium parts like inlet manifold or afm? I have heard soda blasting is one option?

What about nuts, bolts, brackets, etc?

Yup, 'media' blasting is the right way to go.

You need someone who knows their metals and media though. Fortunately my rally mechanic also runs a media blasting business so knows what's what. I can ask him for what was used on what if you like.

Hi Dave, as far as nuts bolts and brackets go it really depends just how far you want to go getting them restored. Some brackets are painted, so that's pretty easy, just clean, rub down, remove rust and repaint. However, bolts and the such really need to be re-plated to look good and that can be expensive in small quantities.

However, you could get a DIY re-plating kit and have fun (like I did) in acid cleaning the rust and old plating off and getting a pretty good finish with zinc, or take a whole lot of fittings off and go down your local electroplaters..Otherwise, buy new??

Here's some I did earlier... :D

if it were me I would soda blast the intake, cam cover, AFM etc and then treat with corosion x aviation to stop oxidation
Just polish the the letters on the cam tower.......I was told that the rough finish in the intake was there to disrupt airflow and aid cooling, don't know it that's true but it's what I am doing

Nuts bolts zinc plate and yellow passivate just post to Derby plating ltd they post it back all done :D

Steel brackets I Zinc plate then powder-coat, powdercoat on its own is not so good on steel

aluminimum brackets that get abuse like control arms etc I powdercoat in silver

soda blast is good because the media dissolves so no chance of nasty glass balls getting where you don't want them

Benjj: Great job on the cam cover. If you could let me know what was used, that would be appreciated

Rhett: That is exactly what I am looking to do. Again, great finish. Which plating kit did you use?

No problem, will get details.

Mine was blasted, primed and then finished in crackle black. Then sanded back using a dead flat piece of aluminium as a guide for the wet and dry. Then a bit of high temp clear coat.

Still minty mint now.

Hey Dave best of luck with the clean up, I took my AFM off , taped up the ends and the plastic cover and whacked it with a wire brush and some elbow grease, wiped it down and primed it and coated it in
High Temp Aluminium paint, from a spray can, from Halfords! The rest is grand

Oh dear ...

I feel so ashamed because my engine bay is a dirty whore-pit in comparison to those ...
