looking for parts such as the ecu, there are a couple of variations of years they are suitable for. what are the differences? and are the engine looms different for different year cars? collecting parts to build a full 944 turbo setup, just want to know if I need to get matching ecu/loom/sensors etc from same year cars. or if I can get them to work together if from different year cars.

many thanks

Rogue Tuning had a new re engineered DME for $600 the last time I checked, makes some UK breakers prices look silly for a 25 year old DME.

Hi,

The turbo loom runs 2 ECUs, a knock sensor and a few other bits.
You will need -

Throttle position sensor (any year)

Air flow meter, part no ends in 026 (any year)

knock sensor (any year)

Flywheel (any year)

944 turbo engine loom and ECUs (not sure but I think you will need to match any early with early or late with late)
Im not sure that the early loom will have the same plugs or a lamda plug, (ask JMG?) so if you get late ECUs you may need late loom.

Or you can get Augtronic ECU/loom from Tom and probably only need the TPS and fit a lamda sensor.
The 1986/87/88 cars don't have a lamda sensor as they are pre cat. Also relating to this I think, the other significant difference I have found is the chips you will be upgrading differ, earlier ECUs are 24 pin and later have 28pin.

You could get lucky on Ebay and pick up the Porsche parts cheaply (avoiding the parts dealers and buying private) but it depends what your end goals are.
The factory loom/ECUs and sensors with a chip set will get you up to about 330hp - but then you run into the Restriction of the air flow meter, and its cheaper to fit Augtronic than buy a MAF set up.

On a side note, if you go for the factory 951 management - you need the flywheel and Turbo clutch, as the timing pick ups are different, but if you go for Augtronic you can keep the N/A flywheel I expect. However, you defo want rid of the N/A clutch and I have never tried a Turbo clutch on an N/A flywheel.

Mr Sumpcracker, I am sorry to hear that you no longer have your 944, one of the nicest looking cars I have seen . In fact due to following your build and an article by Barry from Hartech it was the reason I attempted the turbo conversion on mine in the first place and have not been able to afford a holiday or a new sofa since ! Look forward to reading about your next project.
Simon

Cheers for all that. Got the majority of all the parts here now or on the way.

Aware of flywheel difference and of course will run a 951 clutch

will prob run stock management for the minute. Would like toms setup but this project is currently a budget one to get a car up and running quickly. And 320 odd hp with shorter ratio box etc will be fine for a bit of fun to start with.

got a lux donor vehicle turning up tommorrow. So hopefully that will b a good base to start with.

Regards

I seem to have it in my head that any ECU will work as the pin outs were the same or something like that. The only difference being the pins for the chips inside?

I may be wrong but I was in the same problem when I was looking for mine. I ended up getting an '86 KLR and ECU from America and then got the ECU changed to Augment. I'm still using the KLR though.

Won't early ECUs from the 'states run with lambda sensors?
