After waking the neighbours in the early hours with the alarm going off, it was fairly obvious the battery was flat. I had noticed the fan running when I'd parked in the garage, so I pulled the fan relay, put the battery on charge and went back to bed. Time to replace the thermoswitch in the radiator!

944 606 481 00 temperature switch

New thermoswitch and seal:

I used a 29mm deep socket to get the old one out:

I did mine a couple of weeks ago but had to take out the AFM before I could get to the switch ...

Yours is only a two-wire but mine was three, apart from the obvious, what's the difference??

(ps - horror of horrors I bought a Cambiare item from Ebay for £15.00 delivered - works fine so far...)

Yes, I took the J boot, AFM and air filter housing out as one unit. This gives loads of room for access.

Don't know why the S2 has three wires. Anyone?

The S2 and Turbos came with 2 speed fans, with the third terminal of the switch bringing in the fans at a higher speed when the temperatue goes to the second stage on the switch (from memory the low speed fan comes in at 92 degrees with the high speed coming in at 102 degrees).
