Hi - a new member and looking at my options.

I'm looking at two options: a 968 or a 944 Turbo but for different reasons. (a) I love the look of the 968 but (b) I like the ability to chip / tune the 944 for some serious performance. The one model that really turns my head in terms of looks and performance is the 968 Turbo S.

I've decided to take a radical approach either (a) buy a 968 and turbo / super charge it or (b) buy a 944 Turbo, chip / tune it and then 968 bodykit it.

Any thoughts??

if you do turbocharge 968 you will have to convert it to 8v head, as even porsche couldn't get this to work, not sure why, perhaps heat from 16v or just not space

Easiest option with existing manifolds maybe, Cosworths use 16v heads without heat issues.

i think its a space issue with the 944/968 engine being on a 45º slant due to it being half the 928 engine i doubt you would get a turbo in there unless you used a 13T from a gto/3000gt? still i think that would be too tight

I would have thought it was more to do with cost and ease. With a 3.0L block you can either fit a 2.7L head and ceramic coat the exhaust ports or use a 2.5L turbo head and modify the front water way. The rest of the bit's and pieces come straight from a 944 Turbo, so there's no need to have one off manifolds, engine management, etc. that you would have if you turbo charged with the 16V head. However there are a couple of super charging kits about for the 968/S2 but I think they are big money.

Yup most seem to use the 2.7 head on the 3 litre block when they blow it. 2.7 heads are big money & having looked at it, it seemed a bit strange to down grade to an 8 Valve for the super charger project so mine will have the 16V. A few in the US have turbo'd the 16V by cutting & shutting manifolds so it can be done. Google for turbocharged 968.

Can the turbo head be modified to fit the 3.0 block ?, it seems strange people go to the expense of finding a 2.7 head and changing the exhaust valves if it will, I think the 2.7 head has bigger valves but they are quite hard to find.

Porsche used the 8v head because they were building the car for a specific German race series that had an upper limit on the power. Porsche would have easily exceeded this using the 16v head so bolted on the 2.7 which is a direct fit to the 3.0L block.

You can fit the 2.5 head onto a 3.0L block but as has been said you need to do some cutting and welding so that the waterways line up. The 2.7 does not have this issue and it has larger valves as standard so is the easy way to go with a 3.0L conversion.

There have been several 16v 3.0L Turbos around the world but you will need custom built inlet and exhaust manifolds as well as the crossover pipe to the turbocharger so that makes the whole proposition a lot costlier.

By far the easiest solution is to drop a 2.7 head and the exhaust system from a 944T onto a 968 engine with lower compression pistons, but it will never be cheap thing to do.

I have never personally seen any of the Clubautosport 968 conversions, but forum speak, word of mouth, chinese whispers etc  seems to suggest that up close it is not 100% Porsche quality. I would love to see one for myself if anyone has one as we all know how 'inaccurate' word of mouth can be on forums

I toyed with the idea of a 968 turbo conversion until I found to do it properly does indeed cost plenty with the head, pistons, rods etc, I'd still consider it if a cheap 968 with scrap engine turned up, but I haven't seen one for sale yet.

Sounds like it would be far easier to buy a 944T, chip / tune it and then get a 968 bodykit from ClubAutoSport (or similar). Turboing a 968 sounds like too much trouble - either straight away or in the future...

Thanks for all your comments

Good idea Brett apart from the minor problem of it don't fit a 944! A few conversions have been done but it's a massive amount of work. I suspect it's a lot heavier than the 4 pot as well.
Althogh none-Porsche a better bet would be the Chevy LS-1 or similar from the US, compact, light & more power than a 928 to start with.
And cheaper to get bits for.

it stops it from fully being a porsche tho :( .

i would recommend the 944T i saw which is for sale for 4k. fit a hybrid snail fit a fast road cam or what ever with retarded ex lugs to eliminate lag and have the ecu remapped and a set of bigger injectors and you got a beasty :D
