I own ( although I live elsewhere ) a three story Georgian townhouse in Bath. The previous owner kindly gave me a three extension aluminium ladder which reaches most of the exterior of the house.

Some while ago I lent it to my next door neighbour, saying that he could keep it as long as he wants, provided he gave me a few days notice of when he no longer needed it. This was because when not in use it hangs on back wall of my garage where I keep a number of valuable cars that I'd have to jockey around ( most of which are up on axle stands, with batteries removed etc etc ) in order to get the ladder stored.

A little while ago we went to a wedding in Bath. This was a full fig turnout with tail coat, top hats etc. When we got back to the house the ladder had been returned and was laying full length along the bottom of my garage door, which stopped my remote from opening it. It was chucking it down monsoon like, and the access lane to the garage is unsurfaced and very muddy when wet. It also accesses other garages so one cannot just park a car there and leave it.

I had to get out in the bloody rain in my wedding gear and drag the ladder along the lane and leave it propped up against a lamppost in the street outside.

When I then knocked on my neighbours door, the wife sent her au pair to talk to me and refused to come out. The same happened about an hour later. In the end I rang her and administered a verbal bollocking........it was polite and restrained ( given the circumstances !! I was soaked and just a little bit angry ). She put the phone down on me. Later that day her husband ( who was abroad ) rang me and , clearly, he was not a happy bunny. Now, my wife still thinks I'm a pig, and my neighbours aren't talking to me.

Was I wrong or right ? Anyway, I think I'll sell the bloody place !
