Ok - so it's been a really really wiggly week car wise and over the last week I've noticed a slight noise coming from the front OS corner. I sounds a little like a 'click' as the steering loads on left handers and a deeper 'clunk' as it unloads on right handers. Now, there's no discernible play in the steering rack and the steering wheel is quite tight in that there's no slack as you turn the wheel. I replaced the O/S steering rod last week which gave me a new inner ball joint and a new track rod end, and I replaced both wishbones with Hartech recon units.

With the car on the deck I can grab the to of the wheel and pull it back and forth about a MM, but that's all. With the car jacked I can still do that (and while it was up I checked and re-tightened the bearing) but the play is all the the top of the wheel, if I try to do it at a quarter to three there's no play and none at the bottom ...

I've done about 750 motorway km today and the clunk/click hasn't been so obvious but clearly it's something that needs to be sorted if I can. I've got 4 days here and will have go at fixing it but has anyone got any ideas?

It could be the top mount bearing, but more likely play in the damper strut; my M474 Koni struts have some play in them, particularly when fully extended so this would explain why you can feel it at the top of the wheel with the car in the air.

My car occasionally makes a clunk that is reverberated through the springs, so the noise you report sounds as if it could be that. Like your car everything else on mine has been replaced and I'm currently weighing up my options of what to do for replacement struts. Having the Koni's rebuilt is an option...

Top marks that man ....

I had the wheel off again today and had a good look all round and sure enough the play appears to be in the top bush of the damper/strut.

Now I need to balance the new/second-hand/rebuild equation ..

Muchos

Ah good stuff!

I'm in the same boat as you, really can't decide which way to go! Having Koni's makes things more complicated if anything as it wouldn't be clever to chop them up to fit new inserts. Plus I'm probably going to hill climb mine so that raises more questions than answers.

Good luck in sorting yours
