Okay here goes

D reg 944 turbo came in for MOT for a client a while ago - on starting it up the cam belt gave way - actually tensioner pulley had cracked - car had been stood for 14 months

so stripped it down checked valves and pistons, replaced pulley and cambelt no problem, built it back up and ran the car for 20 minutes no problems

next day started it up after charging battery (duff battery) ran fine for 20 minutes then some some smouldering from the starter, alternator wire. Stopped car and stripped manifold away and I replaced the starter / alternator loom, checked all the other wiring and fuses.

So normally the immobiliser flashes and then when contact is made it beeps three times then you can start the car. Now it flashes and no beeps. Another thing that I note is that when turning key I am sure the volt meter used to read the voltage and the instrument cluster lit up. Currently it doesn't.

so question is what would cause the cluster not to light up when turning key.

next step has to be bypass immobiliser but concerned something else may be the cause.

any advice greatly welcome as scratching my head at moment

Not had the Porsche do anything like that but an old Escort did a similar thing with the dash a good few years ago and it turned out to be one of the resistors on the back of the instument cluster. Might be would trying a cluster you know is good to see if that's the problem.
