We were driving back from Germany yesterday and car developed a mis fire. It was driveable until we got to M20 off the tunnel. I managed to feather it home as it got progressively worse. This morning I tried to start car and it wouldn't fire up and sounded spluttery as it tried to start.

It has spark. My guess is coil pack, but wondering if anyone recognises as a common problem etc.

Also anyone know cheapest place to source ignition parts ( coil, leads etc)

Decided to take a look at my rotor arm today, and this is what I was greeted with. This could of made the trip very miserable to say the least!

Any ideas why this would happen as seems bit severe for wear & tear?

I am surprised it ran in that condition!

Cheap rotor arm maybe (what brand is it?) and a combination of age (on older cars the older parts seem to last alot longer than the new rubbish!).

If this get rid of your intermittent stumbling please let us know . I am thinking AFM but ignition could potentially cause the same problem.

I would leave the coil personally (they very rarely fail IME) and as for the leads they are not the cheapest anywhere (about £80 is now the going rate). They do however have better connectors than almost anything I have seen aftermarket and well, if they lasted well over 10 years...

Me too! The new part is a BERU.

The original plug leads are a great fit. I have had aftermarkets leads over the years on various cars, and usually OE fits best... I'll take your advice on the coil. I'm fitting the new rotor in the morning, so will let you know verdict...

Most people ignore the ignition system as a service item. Replacing the coil, leads, plugs, distributor cap and rotor makes a huge difference to the running of the car. I replaced all on my S2 and it made a giant difference to the running and performance...

So fitted the new rotor today.

Its a little fiddlier than it looks. The distributor cap bottom screw is a pain in the ass to access, and the old rotor had glued itself to the camshaft extension. It came off in about 3 pieces, but left the gold metal sleeve attached to the extension. I used a pair of large water pump pliers to grip and wriggle it off.

I put everything back together, and started the car. Stupidly I had re attached the HT leads round the wrong way so car still ran lumpy! Fixed that issue and obviously the difference was night & day! In fact this seems to of been an ageing problem, as the car seems immensely quicker than before, so put a great smile on both mine and my sons face during a test drive...

Dave, you make a good point about the ignition parts. Whilst the other parts may be working fine, I already put a fresh set of plugs in, and have already ordered a new distributor cap, coil & set of leads. I'll fit the new parts, and keep the old ones as spares for when I go on more trips to europe. I'm off to the ring again in mid october so will carry these with me...

Will probably need to iron out a few teething problems before i go anywhere!
