 Post subject: weekend trip to cologne.

Friday night over diner I joking mentioned there's bmx event and cologne light festival on this weekend. Ended up booking a hotel and euro tunnel and setting off at 5am rather Un prepared. Didn't have and spear dme fuses or wheel. 944 T took it all in its stride, dispite rather hot weather 35degs my intake temps at motorway speeds where 35/40 degs the sort I would see after a hard boost pull over here. That deff effected powered and I kept boost to 1 bar.

Lack off air con rather spoiled the trip 80mph with the windows down for 4 hours straight isn't the most pleasant. Will be attempting another regas off the old system again.

E40 is a very long boring road, but once I got back in the UK you relise just how bad are roads are. With 80mph feeling fast due the the speed off the surrounding cars. Over there slow was 80mph.

Used 130 ltrs off super = 800 miles at 80/100 = 30 mpg

Didn't see another 944 but a few other 911

I've been to Koln 7 or 8 times now and love the city.

I watched footage of a previous BMX festival over there on youtube and did think about it for this year but really there was no-one else interested.... Had I known..... we could have gone! Maybe next year. 8)

RE: your air con, odds on your condenser is leaky Terry. I just replaced mine and the receiver dryer, purged system and re-filled with 100ml of ester oil and R134a. Getting minus 6 degrees through the main dash vent with it up full. Icy cold indeed.

If your condenser is original it will be tricky to free off the two pipes that connect to it. The good news is you can totally wreck the old condenser, which I ended up doing, to free it from the pipes. Some new o-rings for the new parts and all should be good. Get it pressure tested and off you go all being well. My 25 year old compressor is still leak free, quiet and working perfect.

I started off going for a speculative re-gas and ended up doing the above. Receiver/dryer was 30 quid and I picked up a nearly new condenser from Ken for a good price. Incidentally a guy in the states sells them new for £128. Handy if you are planning a trip or know somebody over there. I also came across a top air con guy locally who tested my system and told me what I needed. Then only charged my 30 quid to pressure test, purge the system and fill up with gas and the ester oil. This also means you can run R134a contrary to what scare stories you hear about needing to "convert" your system. I was wary about taking his advice on the gas at first, so I called a Cool It in Dorset and a very helpful chap said it would be ok with ester oil added and a purge before hand. You can also use R12 drop in replacement gas but it's not as efficient as old R12 or the newer R134a. If you want to know anything else give me a shout.

Was a rather last min thing. Wonder how everyone else feel about just jumping in there's and doing 7 hour trip.

Maybe next year, however this year's dates clashed with another comp which mentioned many off the biggest names where else where and was a lot quiter event then in the pass. I only spent an hours or so at the event watched the dirt finals.

Re gas. Sounds like a dream. System was tested a few years ago and regas how often do they need re gassing? Didn't seem to last very long didn't use it much. Think mine my have been converted allready. Will need to look In to it.

Assuming no leaks a re-gas should last years. Essentially if it needs re-gassed the gas has escaped! Obviously the more severe the leak you have determines how long your gas stays in for. Nose seal can need replaced on the compressor but condenser is always the biggest culprit. It's in front of the main rad and gets all the crap of the day thrown against it. Crud gathers and decomposes and they eventually rot. Mines was like a sieve and almost entirely brittle. I feared the worst for the rest of the system but we pressurised it up to 200psi and it held it for 20 mins with no loss. Held a good vacuum too. The compressors seen very hardy in comparison.

You should replace the receiver/dryer any time you have the system open, which you will have to change the condenser.

A working a/c system should be used often to keep it in good order. A few minutes a couple of times a week would be a good idea. You should also use it when your windows are steamed up on the inside, blower on hot. This will clear your windows much quicker as it pulls moisture out the air it re-circulates.
