Afternoon Chaps

Also posted on PCGB. I quite fancy re-commissioning my A/C and it seems my current condenser is porous to say the least!

In the off chance somebody may be sitting with either or both of these new or in good working order please give me a shout.

It's for an oval dash. Condenser is part no. 94457301105 and I believe is a Hella 8FC351038381.

Receiver/dryer is part no 94457394300.

I can get brand new in the states for £130 for OEM condenser and an equivalent receiver/dryer for £10! Needless to say in the UK it seems to be not quite as cheap! £267 for condenser and £75 for receiver/dryer is the best I can find!

Hopefully someone here comes up trumps before I need to contact long lost family in the US!

Don't forget if it isn't R134 refrigerant then it'll need converting. R12 isn't available any more & conversion involves new O rings & dryer. This will need a specialist A/C guy rather than Halfords.

Cheers Jim, was on the ball with that one. I have a guy lined up who can get me topped up, I just need a leak free system first. We pressurised it last night and the condenser was pretending to be an empty tea bag! Just though if a condenser turns up at reasonable cost may as well replace the dryer also and take it from there. I've no idea about the rest of the system just thought if I could get a condenser and new dryer we could see how we go from there.

Having got a system with all pipes hanging, I'm quite interested too but am a complete dunce regarding all matters air-conditional ...

So, enlighten me about the differences between the two types of refrigerant, and what seals have to be changed and why??

OK OLD A/C Overview
Old a/c uses R12 (freon) as a refrigerant. This is a VERY bad CFC & this was recognized in the early 90's, at this point R134 became the preferred gas. But old systems could still be refilled with R12.
From early 2000 CFC's were banned altogether. So therefore an alternative is required, in the early days there was a couple of drop in replacements which were able to mimic R12 but were free from CFC's. The alternative was to convert to R134 which was slightly more complex as things like O Rings & seals were not compatible between the two, so needed changing. At the same time you'd change the dryer (which should be done anytime the system is opened).
The drop ins are A. not as efficient as R12 so you'll get a drop in efficiency. B. They used to be quite a lot more expensive & have dropped from favour,
TBH it is very unlikely there will still be R12 in the system of the old cars but any that is there should be properly recovered under vacuum. Most places don't have the skills or the gear to deal with this, hence my comment about shopping around.

Just to close the loop R134 is now being frowned upon as it is still a CFC although a better one.
Car manufacturers are being forced to change the refrigerant used in A/C systems again. The EU has decided that the refrigerant used for the past 20 years is less environmentally friendly than other refrigerants. HFO-1234yf is the new refrigerant. This was originally planned for 2010 but the start was delayed for a few years because of supply problems.
The only cars which must use this new refrigerant as at November 2013 are those designed from scratch since 2011 but by 2017 every new car must use this new refrigerant.

This HFO1234yf has been very controversial so far. R12 and R134a were efficient and were not flammable but HFO1234yf is very slightly flammable and this has concerned some car manufacturers, mainly Mercedes who were concerned at the risk.
The EU has decreed that Mercedes observe the new EU regulations. The French government had retaliated by refusing to allow the import any Mercedes cars that did not comply with EU regulations. The Germans threatened the French, accusing them of restrictions in trade & the French then lifted the ban.
