The more thought ive put into it the more I think I may have left the factory with more than the quoted 163.

On saturday I started work on waxoyling the back end and rather upsettingly found this

Image

I carried on with chipping away at the old waxoyl and seam sealer and found another hole!

Image

Luckily its the inner wing skin and not the body work its self. The sooner its fixed the sooner ill stop being annoyed so on I cracked.

Image

Now my best work but it was a bugger of an angle, if I have a clearview of it I couldnt get the tourch to it properly and vice versa.

Since having my car its always stumbled slightly for 30 seconds or so after a cold (sat all night) start and after going through the usual WUR, AAV, throttle body, plugs, dizzy, inlet pipes etc I'd almost given in to the fact that I just need to sit in it for a minute before driving as it drives fine when warm. Whilst reading various forums today I stumbled across a guy with the same problem that turned out to be valve clearances.

This made complete sense as over 32 years there will be wear on the valve & seat then when cold the wear will be more obvious than when warm with the metal expanding. Soon as I got home tonight the cam cover was off and sure enough 7 out of 8 valves are tight so an hour later and they're all set (0.45 exhaust, 0.25 inlet). The plan is to put it all back together tomorrow evening and see what it does!!

If it doesn't solve it I'm happy its one more thing I can tick off the list of 'things to do'

So I carried on with the repair and the harder I dug the worse it got.

Image

Finally got the crap cut out and put a small plate in the bottom

Image

Got the grinder in and cleaned up the rest of the old seam sealer inside the car. Then made this rather awkward shape and welded it in.

Image

I also remove the lip at the bottom as it was just a place for mud and salt to gather and promote rust.

A covering of seam sealer and left it to dry over night.

After spending last Thrusday night drilling out a very rusted nut from the boot pin housing (yes, drilling 2 inches at the most from the rear window whilst feeling sick with nerves  ) I replaced the boot pins and lined it all up to find a something still rattling

So tonights job was to strip the rear wiper motor out and oddly enough found most the mounting screws and the smaller bolt that hold the motor to the mech to be loose. Took the time to clean everything up and put it all back together which seems to have done the job!!

Easy free fix which is nice.

Washed it,waxed it, all black plastic polytroled. All interior cleaned thoroughly. Three new bosch wipers fitted at a bargain 11.90 GBP from ECP, Halfrauds wanted 42 GBP.

Have had the same problem as russmw for over 12 months! A rattle that i could not get to the bottom of i tried everything. But now cured! Got a pair of hatch pin seats on line from only944 in America. They replace the old rubber ones that will be either badly perished or completely missing. I had one perished and one missing , took 1hour to remove and clean all parts fit pin seats and put back together and re-aligne. Cost 20 dollers + shipping the best money ive spent in years! Hatch now silent. Check them out worth every penny and delivered within a week.

This morning I finally put the passenger seat back in place - that will please the other half as it has sat in the spare room for a couple of months now!

Finished fitting replacement fuel lines at the back ( flexible ones ).Replaced torn CV boot.Tried to fire it up and it wouldn't go , so replaced the DME relay with hard wiring , which got it going. Then put DME relay back in and it worked perfectly.Probably going to have to replace the relay at some time.Wheres the best price for them currently? Also wheres the best place to buy a replacement front engine oil seal kit? That's probably my next project.

Removed, rebuilt and refitted the nearside door handle so I can open it from outside again :D
Fitted a new trigger and some shims to the drop link to remove the slop. Working great now :headbang:

IMO FrazerPart is the best place. They sell the very latest version of the DME relay and they are about the cheapest as well for a genuine Porsche item.

As for an oil seal kit, I would probably look at Porsche themselves or failing that, someone like Berlyn Services.

This afternoon i refitted the dashboard and started reattaching wires etc to the dials, i removed the dash about a year ago to get part of the loom repaired....didn't mark everything up  so i got the diagrams out and cracked on. Everything in the cluster now works as it should along with the hazard switch. Not bad considering im crud with electrics

This weekend I have mostly been driving my 951 8)

Yesterday I did a 350 round trip to North Yorks to collect a posh gearbox for my Rallye hill climber (I put a big sealed plastic crate in the boot). Normally my golf would get abused for such trips, but this was a great opportunity for my first long trip in the car and wow. Very, very impressed at just how quiet and comfy it is. 90clicks seems to be the sweet spot as boost is there ready and waiting... 25+ mpg is also pretty impressive as I wasn't on economy drive. Now looking forward to my trip to Spa in August with the mrs!

Image

And today I popped along to a local rolling road day across town. I wasn't too sure about putting the car on the rollers as she's running a bit rich low down at the moment (I still think I have some iffy hoses/joints somewhere hidden away in the rats nest...) but I thought sod it, let's see the fruits of my recent tweaking:

Image

Image

Pretty happy with that TBH and a bit up on what I expected! The car is what I consider to be 'mildly' breathed on and is perfectly suited to the twisty b-road driving I bought the car for. Which reminds me, we also went to Curborough a couple of weeks ago and despite the stock M474 suspension being a little soft it was awesome fun!! I set some pretty respectable times too so overall I'm a happy 951 owner right now :)

It is great to see the care and attention you are putting into the car Rich. So if I am correct, you are now running the Stage 1 upgrade with a boost enhancer, 3 Bar FPR and some chips? Not bad power figures regardless :). The main thing is that you are enjoying it.

I serviced mine, and it was quite easy to service. It seems to have had new fuel hoses at the filter which is always a bonus! At the same time (some may say this is a little OTT or detrimental to the car) I took the opportunity to lightly grease the fuel and brake pipes. They were fine, but prevention is better than a cure especially with replacing the fuel lines!

Thanks very much, I'm really enjoying it! You're not far off, but the top of the power graph gives away a DPW ;)

It has 951Max chips, a homebrew DPW (as an experiement I've converted a stock WG to dual port...) and a boost regulator. I wasn't planning to do this just yet, but upon removing the inlet mani to solve some leaks I found the cycling valve was fubar so I was pushed in to it, or so I keep telling myself!

I've done a lot of other maintenance to the car too that I've not had time to post about, so other than the rich running she's in rude health! It now has the correct rear Koni's and Welt rear arb so the balance is now as it should be... It also has fresh brakes so stops as it should too :)
