Up until recently I did not know that the headlight switch illuminated. So upon finding out I pulled off the cover and low and behold a little (blown) bulb. I have replaced it with a bulb removed from a donor car's fan control switch, which lit the fan knob brightly, but the illumination from the headlight switch upon putting it back together is extremely dim to day the least. There seems to be a green filter on the inside of the switch which is killing most of the light.

Anyway, who else has a nob that lights up (ooh err!) and is it bright or is it dim? Maybe the bulbs (although physically the same) are different wattages?

At present the light coming from the switch is equally as useless as the light under the ashtray which also seems to provide no discerning purpose or illumination!

Thanks in advance

Stuart

I replaced my bulb with a green coloured one, you only really notice it at night & It's never been bright on any of the 944s I've owned.

Alan.

Cool. I will maybe try getting the brightest bulb I can for it. Anybody know the bulb type off hand? Maybe an LED one would be brighter?

That's because the light shouldn't be under the ashtray...it needs to clip on the rear side (face) of the ashtray to throw some light into it. However, it is pretty useless at that as well!

Getting an LED bulb that actually fits can be a challenge as the headlight switch bulb holder is quite small, I wouldn't get a higher wattage bulb as they can overheat and melt plastic..I did manage to get a suitable LED bulb on eBay, but you do have to study the photos or check dimensions, even then I had to file it down a bit!

I went through exactly the same process last weekend with the same outcome. I was going to use a cotton by to clean the back of the switch where it lights up the icon to see if that helps. All the Mk2 golfs I had illuminated the light switch soon as the ignition was turned on and I expected the 924 to do the same

It does illuminate once the key is turned once, just extremely poorly!

Yes I do have the ashtray bulb in the right location contrary to what I wrote! And yes it's still pathetic!

I can only conclude that neither the headlight switch light or the ashtray light were ever a rival to the blackpool tower even when brand new, unless anyone can shed any, ahem, more light on the issue!!

Way back in 86 I bought the only new car I have had in my life, a white MG Montego, now I can hear you all laugh but at the time it made sense as my little wife is only 5 ft tall and a host of reasons ruled other cars out as unsuitable for a then young family.
The MG had well lit controls, the ignition was lit and it even had heated wing mirrors. That car cost a mere £8350 to the Porsche 944 then price of about £21000 and to be honest the 944 is an ergonomic nightmare with a plethora of unlit controls and scattered willy nilly through the interior.

Despite all this I love driving my Porsche and just like people its the faults that give it character.
