Still running on the adrenaline of driving the 997gt3 and 4.0gt3rs at the porsche centre yesterday, and with my first track day in a 944 back in Jan, I am finding so much fulfillment in the track stuff versus the clogged roads. Even 30 minutes of track work has the heart thumping and the grin forming. Taking 3.75 hrs from silverstone to sw London last night didn't help the mood much either!!

Am really in two minds now, maybe I just need a long weekend in Wales or France. My car prob isn't right for conversion to track biased - new susp, brakes, cage, seats, arbs etc all needed - so the head says buy one already done, but I have sunk so much into it in the past 12mths I want to keep it for a bit to get my return out of it. Guess I' not the first on this forum to have that problem!!

Oh we'll, that's my dilemma. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who been through this. Or who has a 3.8 gt3 for sale for 10k!!! Where is that lotto ticket from last week?

I've sort have tried to get both mine to be somewhere in between. The 968 is the daily but on KWs and poly bushes it is more than entertaining on quieter roads. I haven't had it on a track and I haven't striped any weight out of it or given up any comforts, so it's more a road car for occasional track use. The 944 turbo is going more the other way. I've striped all the sound deadening out, putting a cage in, bucket seats, air con removed etc. but I am going to put some carpets back in, so the intention is that's going to be a track car I can do the odd trip to Wales, Yorkshire or Scotland in.

It's up to you to decide how far you want to go with you're own car and what you can and can't live without using it on the road, but there's no reason why you can't make some mods that don't really effect the cars road manors but make it much better on a track. If you're not going to race it I don't see why you would want to go mad, even just making sure the brakes and suspension are in top condition and leaving it in standard form the 944 is very entertaining on a track.

Know exactly what you mean. No need to spend a fortune on a car if it's just for tracking (see our 924 build thread.....which I must update)

Beware. the modifying bug! now i have 2 944's one built for track and another for work. you only live once.

do a proper job, buy my 944 turbo shell, with weld in cage fitted, seat rails, harness points etc, rust free, and build it up from scratch!

buy a rusty donor car, and swap all the parts over. cheapest way to do a proper job, i could even do you a deal on a job lot of parts to go with the shell to make it rolling.

I took to the track in 1979 and have always loved a track thrash.
I am not interested much in polished road cars despite this my 944 is very tidy and looks good anywhere.
A friend of mine loves his Porsches and has had several 911's and Boxsters but cannot afford to let loose on track for you must bear in mid that you can lose it on track.

Hmmm, still torn. I don't care cosmetically for cars looks, only their mechanicals and suspension matter for me. Have to be waterproof and safe mind. It's the thrill I'm looking for. I just like driving, and maybe it's age but I find myself being more conservative on the roads, so that thrill I would get 10 yrs ago is not there. Hence why I think track has been such a revelation. However, I live in London and have my cars on the road, so buying any more is out of the question, as is building up a shell unfortunately. Nickson, I just about called you!!! I think ill do a couple more days in the turbo first, then make up my mind. Would be nice to get in some other cars even as passenger to see what the setups are like.

I'll be taking my 944 turbo (track prepared) to Snetterton on Sun 23rd March. If you fancy a trip out I'll gladly take you for a few laps.

I think we all worry a bit on track as there might be no insurance.
When I was younger we drove up from Hants to Mallory in my MGBGTV8 and raced in the MGCC championship and drove back in the same car.......my wife was very pregnant with our daughter.............but hell I was young and foolish then
I love driving circuits so much that I will just do it, only you can choose how much risk to take.
All I say is that cars dont matter much really and they are built to use.

My 944 S2 will get chance to stretch its legs on track in 2014 to give my MKII RS2000 a rest - lol lol

My first 944 was road focused. This current Turbo is more biased towards track work but bar speed bumps and some cambered roads (singletrack roads in villages) it is surprisingly usable on the road. Even humps etc. in the road (as in on a dual carriageway, not the speed bumps!) it seems to smooth them out with ease. Bumpy roads however (poorly surfaced) are more noticeable in this car over the Stag and the 205 (that is on Group N Bilsteins, but at stock height). The 205 is great on the track (but lacking the outright pace of the 951), but also a superb B road blaster, possibly better than the 944 on some B roads.

Out of the two 944s I prefer my current car, simply due to it being on fresher bushes/suspension which on any car will bring a pleasant difference about. The KWs like Dave's car however do allow you to have your cake and almost eat it (long journeys are not a problem for instance, but track work is great too ).
