HEADGASKET GONE !!! 8v n/a

Just got mine back today.Took it to Autograph Specialist Cars in Wakefield.They took the head off and it was so badly corroded it couldnt be skimmed so Ive had a reconditioned head put on and new belts ,head set including valve stem oil seals,new thermostat,one roller changed,oil drained ,flushed and refilled plus filter,cooling system flushed and refilled,alternator belt fitted and anew horn(would you believe it? the old one just fell off as I set off to Wakefield!!).Apparently the water had been leaking inside the head and could have gone bang anytime.It cost me just under £1500.00 but I dont think thats too bad considering all the work thats gone into it.Parts £500.00,labour £760.00(£40 ph)+vat.Oh well,I sense some overtime coming on in the near future!!.

And it's all done & sorted cambelt wise for another 3 years or so. Doesn't sound too bad to be honest. I suspect it drives much better as well?

Sounds quite good. Seen his cars for sale but always at top doller. But if there well sorted & serviced in with the price maybe not so bad. I didn't go to look at his as the price put me off!

A bit confusing pic wise as it shows the turbo one without the outlet flange to the turbo ?, i'm looking for one that is has not got the nylon elbow that has to be blanked off with a hose ended off

Anyone know of any more suppliers of quality pumps (seen some Laso stateside websites any been there for one ?)

Only driven it home so far Jim but it seems ok,and guess what? The belts whine,I saw something about this on another thread.Im told they will quieten down in a while,got to take it steady for 1000 miles or so then take it back for re torqueing etc. I reckon by the time Ive been to Silverstone Classic and then Gaydon I wont be far off that!

They all whine, especially when newly installed. Yup need adjusting at 1000-2000 miles. Keep an eye on fluid levels for a while as well, mine had a slight air lock on the cooling after being refilled & suddenly took another 0.5 litre or so after a couple of hot/cold cycles.
Yup should be well bedded in after all of the events!

it probably didn't whine because of the lack of balance belts, retension at between 2-3k miles

Yep, then i got the Porsche letters milled down at work, really pleased with it. Just got to reassemble the cambox and tension the belts and final fit of ancilaries then its fingers crossed for a start up at the weekend.

On the tensioning of the cam & balancer belts, i have no special tools so i'm gonna follow the twist method and double check it before starting. Did you have yours done recently ? any tips ?

Fired up and running :shock:

,,,,,,just got home after a final evening of putting the final parts back on ..belt covers final nip on the hose clips and level checks, road test and a it seems ok ..no big leaks,,,took an age for the cooling system to bleed .will check the level in the morning here are a couple of pics

Initial drive feels more responsive, (tick over is slightly high but i'll do the setting up after a 40 mile work run tommorow), but that's probably just an cleaner intake etc, and i had the injectors ultrasonically cleaned and the spray pattern is now conical.so it should run cleaner.

The job was the biggest i've took on and if you do a lot of research and follow a set method i think its well within most of us to do, lots of labelling of bagged parts and throughly cleaning and inspecting components is a big task, (we have a large hot wash at work that just takes all the pain out of that task).

All in all a massive learning curve for me and lots of late nights, a big thanks to you guy's for all your tips and advice ,looking forward to swapping stories and a supping a few beers at Gaydon.
