I have had my blower unit out today and found that it does not have an outside temp sensor mounted next to the drivers side intake. There is the bracket & wiring for it, but no sensor.

Should all HVAC systems have this sensor installed, or is it only used with a climate control car (if any different to the earlier blue/red dial setup) or air conditioned model?

My system seems to be working OK, just wondering whether it should be there!!

PET shows it as standard fitment for a 1988 944, but I guess it could still be specific to AC?

I think it is fitted when climatronic (I think thats what it was called was fitted) nowt to do with A/C but enables an accurate heating temp to be set.

I did think that might be the case Jim, but I always thought that the HVAC control changed to the climate control type (rather than the cold/hot type) from 1989 onwards - so wondered why a pre '89 car would have the wiring.

Unless climate control was an option before it became standard fitment.

As I say, mine appears to be working as it should - just something I noticed when I had the blower out.

Does your car have air conditioning?

I would have to double check, but as I believe is the case, the 944 uses the sensor which is on the intake side of the HVAC so that if the temperature is bellow 5 degrees (from memory) it will not allow the air conditioning to cut in as it may cause the evaporator to ice up.

Not to be confused with the side of the climate control which has a minimum cabin temp of 18 degrees, as the air conditioning can still energize with the heating on, for drying purposes.

So, as far as I know it, the sensor you are talking about, not the cabin temp sensor, should only be installed on air con cars, not just the climate control cars with temperature control (rather than just blind cold to warm graduation on the dial) even though the wiring is there for it..

It could be installed, but it would just be along for the ride.

Thanks for that Jon - makes perfect sense!

No my car doesn't have A/C so I will leave it as is :D
