Hi, looks like i have a leaking front shocker on my 944, so it looks like i shall be on the lookout for a decent pair of s/hand ones, my car is a 1986, and i think has the earlier suspension, will any 944 ones fit or do i have to look for ones from my year of car.
if anyone has a good pair gathering dust ( turbo ones would be nice ! ) i would be interested in buying them,

I'd get a pair of new inserts for your existing struts if the budget allows, unless you know exactly how old they are i'd consider secondhand ones to be a bit of a false economy.

Is the car a square dash or oval?

Its oval dash, thats the thing at the minute, budget !.After the w/pump and belts, cookie cutters and rubber, i still have to get new wheel nuts and lockers, there,s not much left in the bank i,m affraid........i could sell a kidney i supose, , , , , , Dave

new shocks all round on my Y plater were about £500.

Assuming your springs are ok a good compromise would probably be to get a pair of complete legs, then when you do need/can afford and are inclined to buy new inserts the legs are off the car an you can do them at your leisure.

Check out how much a pair of inserts (mine were oe which i think were boge) are and just don't pay too much.

euro car parts should do them for about £200 for the pair, if they don't come up online go into the branch and if you are nice they will source them.

my 91 turbo ones were no longer available and i had to get them from porsche for £457 inc vat

used in my opinion is a false economy for shockers, if they have been lying at full extension without springs the rust and dirt gets dragged through the seals the first time they are used.

these may be for the later suspension, be careful you do some research, don't rely on any parts suppliers to have the correct info!

Dave, it shares the series one cars 23mm offset, but it uses series two dampers. Don't buy dampers for an early dash car because itll have holes which are too small.

Further to the above, it doesn't have 'old suspension' in any way. It has series two suspension which is different, but it shared the original offset which was changed on the 1987 model year cars.

Sachs are a reputable company and make the 944 clutch.

I wouldn't have a problem using them.

Sachs are standard fitment from the factory and seem to be a great all round damper IME .

those are inserts rather than full struts

just to confirm you can def remove the old strut inserts and put new ones in, lift the protective boot on the strut and check that the strut insert retaining cap is screw on, not crimped on (which can't be changed).

if you have inserts..........they are known to leak because they put a small amount of oil between the insert and strut to aid cooling. These struts can be diagnosed as leaking when it is just the oil leaking out of the insert holding chamber.

Thanx for that, got a bit of tinkering to do in the next few weeks, got a new engine and front leaf springs to go on my landy, then start with the porsche THEN start with the mx5. . . . . . gonna be a busy boy . . . . . . . .
