Thanks for the kind offer, sounds like its the autonater.

How much was your replacement read there the same as Volvo 740 which should make them
Cheaper to source

Hi

The VR was from GSF and I think was around £20, made by Topran, part number 101 506 rated at 14.5v.

The alternator was a nearly new one which was sourced from a club member who was having a clear out. If I recall correctly there are places that rebuild them at quite a competitive price, I'm sure someone on here might know a name etc.

Forgot to mention, I think part of the problem with replacing just the VR is that, whilst the sprung bushes wear, the copper slip rings that they make contact with can also wear and become grooved, reducing contact area. Replacing the copper slip rings is a bit of a ball ache.

You Tube has some Interesting tutorials on this dark art.
