the only thing that worries me slightly is the liner type engine that the 944t runs, and the s2 16v engine, i know at high power levels the liners can be a weak point, and heat issues due to expansion differences in block/liners, aswell as the reduced block stiffness compared to a steel block etc. i know of a few people who have had a steel liner block built by reputable tuner, and still lunched the engine even at 350 odd hp!!

i want more like 500+bhp so im not sure the liner type engines are reliable at this level? if im wrong please correct me jmg etc.

Nick, at the risk of stating the obvious 944 engines don't come from the factory with liners, or were you referring to blocks retro fitted with aftermarket liners ?

just sent an email to a specialist that has been recommended to me, dialynx is the company, and they seem to be the big boys in the uk when it comes to these engines

the audi sport Quattro is pretty much one of my favourite cars in the world and runs this engine, its just the noise alone!!

waiting to hear back from dialynx and see what sort of money these engines cost to buy and build to take decent power.

Dynalynx will be gold bars...probably cheaper to ask audi themselves...lol...
If you do a 20 v I'd be interested in doing one to keep costs down etc etc...

I think I'd save some time/hassle and start with an Audi S2 coupe instead.

As long as the sleeves are installed properly into the 944 block they are fine. The issue with high powered 944 motors is block and head flex at peak cylinder pressures. However 500bhp should be fairly comfortably attainable. Having said that, the all iron block of a 924 could be an interesting project. Remember that the 5 cylinder Audi motor is quite long and I’m pretty sure they mated a Supra gearbox directly to the motor which would have changed the balance considerably.

Really depends on how involved you want to get with this project. If you can tubeframe the front end, then the world is your oyster so to speak. If not, then even a cammed LS n/a motor presents a pretty strong argument in terms of cost and reliability. We’re currently running approx 485bhp in a car weighing 2550lbs wet and it’s plenty fast. This is with a 3.1Ltr 944 turbo motor which would have cost a lot more than the LS for equivalent hp. My preference is also for a turbo Porsche motor rather than the US muscle…but given my time again….

Not many people I'd trust to do it properly though.

I would think dry sleeving is pretty old hat in the UK?

I still read stories about slipped/dropped liners though. I'd think I'd want the block heated, the liners chilled and someone who knows what interference dimensions to use pressing my liners fully in.

I’d potentially look into buying a used block in the US and have it sent to one of the places that does this all the time. Can’t think of the name off the top of my head but their website is quite detailed showing many pics of the process. Conversely if you can find a used block in good condition then just go with coated pistons and not even sleeve it?

I'd get hammered on postage and import duty I think, Plus I've got a unmarked 2.7 block that looks like it 104.5mm would freshen it up. If not it probably wouldn't cost anymore for Capricorn here to dry liner or coat the block. I'm still a bit unsure about the longevity of the latest coated pistons though.

I'll wait until turbotim has his engine installed I think and see how it does.
