Track Cars

Hello,

Been looking around for a car to use as a track car. Planning on removing most of the interior, cage and race seat and harnesses.

Thought about Golf and similar but have now set my hart on a 924 or 944, they seem quite cheap and plentiful (for the less looked after ones).

Anybody got any suggestions on which models, engines etc to steer clear of? Any recommendations? Nearly bought an 82 2.5 944 for £500 tonight but thought I would seek some advice first.

Just be very careful and have deep pockets because virtually everybody I know who have gone down this slippery road get bitten by the how do I go quicker bug,

An early 944 or a 924S (same engine a bit lighter) are perfect track starter cars 160ish bhp parts are plentiful, 2.7(180ish) or 3.0S2(210) are more powerful but rarer.
Are you a Tipec member Neal, you could go along to your local meet and there would be plenty of brains to pick or someone to checkout your prospective purchase with you?

Yes I am a tipec member but not managed to get to any meets lately, been manic with work and working on the car has taken a lot of spare time.

My next plan was to ask the local members if anyone knew of a car that needed rescueing or was for sale cheap.

By far the cheapest and easiest way to get a track car is to buy one that has already been prepared and/or raced.

I had a road-legal track-day saab for a while - engine mods, trick suspension, full cage, stripped interior with funky seats and belts, big brakes, huge wheels with trick tyres...

Great fun and huge value - you could look at almost any one of the items on the list of good bits above, and the whole car, taxed and mot'd cost less than any one of the modifications.

Personally I'd go for a pre-prepped car but with a preference for a 924S.
5 stud wheels so bigger choice of rubber
Some golf based suspension so cheaper parts cost.
Decent engine with potential to drop a 2.7 or 3 litre in when you want it to be faster.

keep an eye on ebay theres always some prep'd cars available at reasonable prices
