Hi Guys,

I've stumbled upon a bit of luck recently. My Mum's friend has had a 944 in their garage for the last 5 years and has decided to get rid of it by scrapping it! My Mum mentioned that I like working on cars so it was given to me, for free!

Now this car hasn't moved for 5 years so I have my work cut out for me, I had a brief look over it and couldn't see any real problems but even if there are I can't really complain about a free car especially when it's wearing Fuchs

I'm currently in the process of sorting out my 98 Passat which has needed a bit of attention due to the fine Devon roads and I need to get it out of the way so I can start work on the 944. I should be able to pick it up in roughly 3 weeks and I can't wait!

I'm hoping to learn a lot more about these cars and I've spent the last 3 days just reading stuff about them and I can't wait to get my hands on it and get it back on the road.

From the pics that looks a pretty straight 944, congrats. A nice result as well finding it on fuchs. Any idea why it was taken off the road?
Once you get it going, I'd start with a new set of tyres (there almost certainly flat spotted), then overhaul the brakes and from there its a long slippery slope....

It was taken off the road as the previous owner basically couldn't be bothered to continue work on it and went off to do something else (they're not exactly short of cash). They had the engine rebuilt before it went into the garage where it stayed.

I'm not taking any chances with it so I'm going to change all belts filters and fluid, tyres and brake lines before I even try starting it up and driving it. Can't wait to get to work on it though

Looks pretty good for a freebie. At least it has been dry stored so should be too bad bodywork
Mine had sat nearly stationary for fifteen years and had totally square and perished tyres.

Good luck with the work. Bet you don't wait the three weeks to collect it!

Thanks guys. If I could get away with collecting it sooner than 3 weeks time then believe me I would, I can't wait to get stuck in and have spent most of my time since I looked at it getting information about them on the net. Sadly I have to wait for the caravan blocking the garage door to be shifted and then I can get it towed to my parents house just around the corner from it.

I have a couple of questions about it. On the passenger door (not sure about the drivers side) there is a small lock underneath the door handle, you can see it on the picture from the rear (sorry about the blurryness). Any ideas what it is? Eventually I hope to have it removed and smoothed over.

Also the aerial is snapped off, do the early 944s have retractable/electric aerials or is it just the later models?

Fantastic. The engine rebuild saved yoiu 4K to start with. The body looks ok from the photo's so I think thats well worth sorting out. Bet you can get that sorted for about a quarter of what I've spent on mine.
Might have dead locks. The aerial on mine is in the windscreen (Later oval dash type.)
If you havn't joined TIPEC yet now would be a good time. The discount on GSF will probably pay for it by the time you replaced discs, pads, maybe shocks. What mileage has it got on it?
Might want to change the timing belt before you start it if it's been stood 5 years. It will be as good as the tyres.

The plan is to change all belts tyres and most rubber parts before firing it up.
Discounts are always good, I have discount at a few VW places as I've spent a fortune on parts there so need to sort out some for the new motor.

If you look in the first pic I posted you can see the remaining stub of the aerial in the wing but I have no idea how to get the thing out and replace it.

There is no might about it, change the belts and pulleys before you even try to start it, otherwise it might well be scrap.

i'd chuck a couple of cc's of oil into each bore to before you crank it over, and build up the oil pressure via cranking with the plugs still out prior to firing her up...

The ariel should be accessable from inside the drivers side wing. If I remember correctly the early cars dont have inner wing liners.
On the 82 944 I had I just fitted a universal one and it looked fine.

Just noticed, looks like thats not got a sunroof, quite rare and one less seal to replace.

The aerial on my 1982 944 is electric and it still works perfectly well.
It looks quite similar to the remains of your aerial.

I'm just installing some image editing software on this pc so I can get a zoomed picture of the aerial stub.

Well it didn't come out quite as well as I'd hoped as I foolishly took the pic on my phone because I left the camera in the car like an idiot but I hope you can see it well enough. It just looks like somebody has fitted a standard Halfords one in there which has been snapped off at the base. I at least want one that can be retracted as last week some idiot decided to jump on the bonnet of my 3 month old VW so I doubt an aerial would last very long.
