I've got an 86 Lux that I wish to upgrade the brakes on.

The main reason is that it's got a turbo engine waiting for it so didn't think the standard ones would be good enough for the power hike.

I've looked through a few options, the willwood fronts that Promax list seem decent but don't think they'll be good enough for the turbo?

I was looking at doing turbo brakes but stumbled across a thread saying that boxster s brakes I believe the 986 and 996 brakes can be fitted with adapters from the Porsche Shop.

I've looked at these on the website and tried searching online but can't seem to get many reviews on them.

Has anyone on here done it and are they any good? The plus to me is that they also look good

Dont rule out the original ATE calipers. They stopped the original 928 with more power than a turbo and a lot more weight!

ive got a full set of front and rear turbo brakes, hubs, carriers etc for sale if your interested

1986 Turbo brakes are unique to that model year. If you want to add Brembo brakes to a 1986 944 then youll either need 1986 Turbo parts or youll need to make your hubs and suspension 1987>.

The wheels I've got won't fit the later offset sorry.

It seems not many people have done the conversion then. Anyone know anyone who has that I could get in contact with?

Id worry about fitting the engine and getting it all working, whichll be a far bigger issue. Then try the brakes that you have. I think that theyll be more than adequate.

Theyre 911/928 brakes after all and were a massive overkill on the 944.

As 944 man has said, well sorted stock brakes are very good. And don't forget that fitting bigger brakes with a lot more stopping power is all well and good. But you brakes are only as good as the grip you have. You may find yourself constant locking wheels and being worse off that is you had less, but more controllable braking capabilities.

I have this discussion a lot with the aircooled VW crowd as they all want "better" brakes on the beetle and decide to go from drums to discs. Not realizing that is they cleaned up and properly adjusted the drums on the front they would lock up pretty easily, making them more than ample for a stock 44hp engine.

Darryl, Gav (sumpcracker on here) is the chap you need to speak to regarding converting a Lux to a Turbo .

I would be tempted to see what Fast road pads do with your ATE callipers. I understand that finding such pads besides Extremely Bad Crap can be tricky.

Having brakes that lockup does not account for much IMO, having modulation in addition to the power though is more important IMO. Yes, Beetle drums are great when setup (like you I set mine up on my old 1200 and they were better than most tired Bug anchors out there), (as are the discs on my Stag) but there are setups out there which give you more braking power without them locking up as easily .

Those of your with fancy pushbikes might get what I am saying. V-brakes can lockup with ease, but are IME trickier to modulate than hydraulic disc brakes.

Performance Fristion make them but theyre listed as either 924S (likely) or 924 Turbo (less likely).

I'm going to get a set of fast road pads, fluid and disks as suggested and see how I get on.

I may just have terrible pads and disks in mine as I don't rate them at all at the moment.

I had a 15,000 mile 1987 car in the early nineties and it was virtually new. The car would almost stand on its nose when you applied the brakes hard enough at 70mph and the only limiting factor and possibly the reason that it didnt do a forward roll, was the 195 tyres that Merlin Nottingham fitted before they sold it (it came with 215s).

The brakes in my 2.7l were terrible, but it was parked up before I got to the bottom of it. I suspect cheap discs and new, but terrible pads.

I wouldnt be surprised to find either blocks of wood, or EBC pads. Probably wood as there was too much braking effort for them to be EBC.
