...does anyone in or around North Herts have a set of 944 wheels and tyres I can rent for 4-6 weeks?

My 944 is going in for a respray/bodywork and whilst the car is off the road I thought I'd get the wheels refurbed too. I was going to borrow a set from a friend but these are no longer available and the bloke at the bodyshop will need to move the car about whilst its with him. Tyres do not have to be road legal.

Odd request, but thought I'd try here before resorting to ebay for a cheap set.

Thanks!

One thought for you is to use Exel wheels (Chris is based in Luton) who provide you with an excellent wheel recon service (via Lepsons(?) in Kent) AND he'll lend you a set of wheels whilst he has yours. Almost certainly no more expensive than the routes you're suggesting.

Worth considering Exel wheels (Chris is based in Luton) who not only offer an excellent refurb service but ALSO lend you a set of wheels whilst yours are away. Almost certainly no more expensive than either of the options you are considering and probably more convenient.

Thanks Mick - having had a quick look the price is certainly comparable, I'll have a chat with them tomorrow as I'm not sure they'll be too keen on their loan wheels being tied up for a month :)

Jason - T&P Autobodies in Kempston are doing the respray, they're also going to be doing some bodywork too. They were recommended by Nick at Auto 2000 who has looked after the car since I bought it eight years ago. I had an extensive talk with them about the car, looked around the shop, asked about previous cars they had worked on and they sent me several photo sets of 911s, 944s and a few Maserati's they have repaired/restored. It all looked like great work so I took the plunge. If you are interested I'll post up a pic or two?

Bow Runner - Hello! I've seen a black 944 on the Baldock/Buntingford road a few times, the badge panel has been replaced by an after market air intake, is it you?? V. nice car!

I would get wheels done after paint, best to leave the paint as long as you can without washing, so that without use, no wheels will stop that. Plus my expernce with body shops is they never turn your car round in time. 6 weeks could end up longer.

Sounds like we're all in the same area. One of the best roads around that is :D

Thanks Terra - will have to get the wheels done after the paint job if I can't find a spare set. I'm fully expecting the 4-6 weeks at the bodyshop to potentially roll on a fair bit... gives me an excuse to properly sort put my garage. 8) Just out of interest is it best to leave the paint on the car unwashed for a while to 'let it settle' as it were?

Mick - I link that road up with the bypass so I can drive the fun but very short tunnels. Almost perfect drive :D . Have you ever attended the Tipec meet up at the Goat Pub in Hertford every month? The Tipec members are a small part of a much larger, really friendly crowd and the mix of cars is everything from hot rods to a Lambourghini Muira - usually have a drive before going there.

Cleaner you can keep it less chance you will have scratching the paint washing it. This MIT be worth a read, shouldn't wax withing 1st 3 months?

The black 944 you mention is not me as I still have the standard badge panel. I was driving the baldock bypass late last night coming back from Cambridge but don't drive that way often. I mostly have a blast on the a505 to Luton or the B655 to Barton le clay.

I'd be up for heading to the Goat one Sunday. When is the next meet up?

Mick/Bow Runner - The meet up is the first Sunday of every month at the Goat Pub in Hertford Heath at about 11am-ish and Tipec normally have a small presecence there;

http://www.thegoathertfordheath.co.uk/location/

Its really informal and I normally turn up, have a beer and wander round the various cars. Unfortunately I'm away for the next two but don't let that stop you! Vince Dallimore (North London, Herts and South Essex RO) is usually there with his black 928. Alternatively I'm next going on 5th Jan if you fancy it?

Terra - I honestly had no idea about after care of a repainted car. I would have assumed that once it left the paintshop everything had cured ect. Waxing it would have been one of the first things I would have done! Many thanks.

Yes, my 1st thoughts as well. Get some protection on b4 it needs a wash. I know my black 944 was nightmear to wash after its respray without scratching or marking paint, even with new cloth each time e.c.t
