I've been thinking about a 924 with regard to this. I had some reservations on whether to buy one so soon, but I've just made a deal that neither of us can refuse.

The good:
- It rolls
- It runs - just.
- It brakes
- Bodywork looks sound
- Interior is quite neat
- All electrical accessories work
- Wheels are tidy


The bad:
- Bodywork looks dreadful. Pealing in places, dent on drivers door, scratches on bonnet
- Clutch bite point is very near floor
- Radiator leaks
- Needs full service and overhaul of brakes and other moving things
- Hasn't been on the road for 5 years
- I think it has sill rot
- I only have two parking spaces at home, and now I have three vehicles!

Anyway, pics! So, he originally wanted £1299, then offered it at £850. How much do you think I have paid, and should have paid?

I'm hoping no more than £200 quid looking at those pics!! Don't like seeing them scrapped but unless that's a labour of love there's a lot more money in fixing it than it would be worth.

Hmm, you're all making me feel I've paid over the odds. His idea of it's value was well out of proportion, but seeing as non-running 924's sell on eBay for £400, I thought that paying a bit more than that for one with a working engine was worth it. I'm nervous to say now!

it doesn't look too bad and considering thanks to the scrappage scheme cars are getting harder to find if you was happy with it thats the main thing.

Probably a bit harsh saying free my 944 was but it did need a new flex plate and lots of other electrical issues and work plus yours is a 924.

I would say £400-£500 at most.

You can't really put a price on fun.

I'm into my early 944 for more than it's worth. Bought last summer for £2400, I immediately spent £600 on parts and £1100 on labour plus put in about 120 hours myself. Since then I've dropped about another £1500 on 8 reconditioned wheels, set of summer tyres, set of winter/rally tyres and misc other bits.

Just get cracking, you'll soon forget the price and just enjoy it for what it is.

Benjj: Exactly. I paid £1500 for my 944 two years ago. I have probably spent £4000 on it since then. But now it has so few remaining problems that I obviously need another project!

I gave Martin £695. I offered him a lot less, but he wanted me to have the car for the right reasons, and he was too emotionally attached to let it go for less. Even if I have paid a bit too much, like you all have said, I have saved it from the scrappers, and I shall enjoy it.

Well done Alex....agree entirely, enjoyment has no equivalent monetary value. A few months ago, I was seriously considering spending £12K to 20K on a 964 mainly for track use. Thankfully I avoided the mistake of going it alone with this idea ( I have no spannering expertise) which would have turned into an expensive exercise. Instead, I went into a car partnership (with a trained mechanic...Col 944 from this forum), purchasing a MY 1984 924. The purchase price was similar to your car and I estimate a final build cost of circa £1.5K on top of this.

I will benefit from learning how a car is put together. The car will be preserved and used. If we do "bend" it badly on track neither of us will have lost a fortune.
