I've just joined up.

I fancied a 928 years ago but i have been searching for a new car (to me) and i've been looking at Camaros and Firebirds etc, but not had much luck finding a good one at the right price. So i'm widening my search abit. I noticed early 928's can be had for £2,500-£3,000 so they should just be in budget with a bit for a service etc once i get it.

I know a reasonably priced mechanic who is good, and living in Leeds its not too far to Specialist Cars of Malton to check the car over and for 928 specific work.

Just thought i'd say hello, and hopefully there will be a few 928's at Harewood House for Cars in the Park on the 12th of September in a couple of weeks.

Mark.

Hi Mark :)

Welcome :)

The usual calculation on a 928 is to expect to spend around 33% to 50% of the buying price in the first year on essential jobs....

Oh and when you are buying , a couple of tips....

The aircon NEVER just needs re-gassing.....like all the ads say, so either allow around £2k to fix it or live without it like I have for 6 years, the climate control (separate from the aircon) is pretty good anyway.

The best tip is this...928 mechanicals are almost bulletproof but the electrics are NOT...

So check EVERY electrical item...every window, boot release, wipers, washers etc etc...

If they don`t work use it as a wedge to beat the price down, none are too complicated to fix though...

Dont let me put you off as any 928 is a great car in its day it was and almost still is a SUPERCAR.... :)

My famous saying now....

Every morning when I go out (daily driver) and that HUGE V8 rumbles into life it puts a smile on my face all day :) :) :)

All the best Brett :)

Hi Brett, i recognise your username from Pistonheads. Thanks for replying.

I noticed when i was reading up that the Air con is a pretty expensive and complicated thing to get running right. I'll make sure i check it out before i buy. As well as all the electric functions.

Saw one for sale and the drivers seat electrics don't work although the seller could see the cables unplugged under the seat. Not much use if you cant get behind the wheel to drive it home :?.

What year did they up the power output and move to a 4 speed auto from a 3?

Thanks,

Mark.

Hi MARK :)

Yes I used to be on PH before they banned me :)

Thats a habit of mine getting banned..no idea why as I am such a nice guy lol :)

Lol, if the seats unplugged, just plug it back in...what he really means is the seat wont move and he unplugged it as an excuse...

Only the very early 928s has the 3 speed auto from around 81/82 the hp went up and you got the 4 speed auto, although around 15% of ALL 928s are manual, but they hold a better price...

For your money, I would guess you should be looking for an 82 to 85 S or S2 (if you can afford the extra)

The S2 was 300 hp apart from the very last year 1986 (like mine) which got a 310 hp engine with twin dizzies and all S4 suspension and brakes (4 pot calipers etc)

Where are you in the country as I will always come with you for a look if you are near me in Bournemouth ?

All the best Brett :)

Hi MARK :)

Oops just reread your first post..you are in Leeds lol..

A little far from me...

Specialist cars are well known as having GREAT cars for sale at HUGELY increased prices....

Recently when 928 GTS were going for 12 to 15k they had one up for 25k lol

Having said that it WAS in amazing condition....

Don`t know about their garage labour rates though, although I imagine they would not be cheap...

All the best Brett :)

Hi Brett, thanks for the offer but i live in Leeds. (Just noticed you reread the first post)

If i find any interesting cars for sale in your neck of the woods that would be most appreciated though, thanks.

Yeah I think SC go over the cars with a very close look. They basically replace anything that may need replacing in the first year as its cheaper to do it in the workshop than afterwards when it would be looked down on in a reputation way at the price you pay.

Basically if you can afford it you should be assured of a very nice car from them. However they can spend £0000's in prep so like you say not the cheapest but should be no quibble if anything needs replacing and the probably sell some of the top vehicles available in each model they sell.

To expensive for me to buy from them at the moment though, lol.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I hope you find a decent model for the price, as brett says, they always put that grin on our face no matter which model you have. My 911 does the same for me.

Enjoy the ride.

Thanks, i hope i can find something good, soon as well.

Haven't had a car for about 4 months . Not managed to find a Camaro, so as i could hopefully get a reasonable early model 928, i thought i would add them to the search as well :bounce:.

Hello and welcome, I see what you mean about SC, but they have a brilliant reputation, and they have/sell some very rare and interesting cars

Yeah, you should be pretty sure of getting a good car from them.

If you have the money i imagine its a pretty hassle free way to buy to add to your collection :bounce:.

The aircon on my 928 S4 had been "regassed for sale" and it failed about 2 weeks after I got it.

However I got it fixed by Loe Bank Motors for £600. It needed a new condenser, a new drier, and some rubber seals, plus a conversion to R134.

It was still working 5 months later when I sold the car.

That's not too bad price wise if it is working fully afterwards and does a good job for a few years.

:) I was orignally looking to buy a 67 Camaro RS before I bought my 928 but basically I re-evaluated what I wanted the car for and decided that I wanted something more than just a cruiser. I still don't think you can beat the sound of a yank V8, primarily because most will accomadate a twin pipe set up which you can't do with the fuel tank where it is on a 928. It came down to the fact that you get so little horsepower for your money in a car that really doesn't like going round corners.
A friend of mine who has several 928's persuaded me to look at them and I ended up buying the car I have now and so far the only real downside is I managed to get 6 points on my licence and came close to walking for a little while! I had a problem with the air con but hopefully that's all sorted now and I can just get on and enjoy it. As others have said just be mindful to budget for any problems the car has as spares and repairs are still based on the cost of the car when it was new.
I hope you find something and enjoy what you buy. :)
