That's what I did as some previous owner had removed the original amplifier.
I made up a loom and reconnected all the speakers but came up against problems getting all six rear speakers to work as connecting them resulted in an excessive load on the stereo (3 ohms)
I think the Porsche amplifier had multiple outputs.
In the end I took a chance on it and the stereo did survive, the rear shelf speakers do improve the sound if they are working properly.
Hi Lightning
I just removed the Porsche amplifier and made up a loom for my 1988 S4 as you mentioned above. All mine work OK but I have noticed that if I have the volume up too loud the Head Unit switches off and back on again. Works OK if I turn the volume down! So maybe i'm suffering the same thing - too high load. I have a fairly good Kenwood Head Unit BT8041U, which has a seperate amp out which I couold make use of but was going to look into the Head Units wiring details much closer before I did that.
I don't want to hijack this thread so may do my homework and come back on a seperate thread for help with you guys who seem to know more about auto HIFI set up & electronics than I.
Any help or ideas would be appreciated though.
Thanks
Steve
If your earth is not good then only so much power can be earthed through the ariel and case.
My MK2 MR2 had the same problem, the cheap cd player it came with had problems cutting out. So i purchased a nice top of the range Alpine unit instead. I put it in, wired it up and it was fine on the radio but every time it went to cd you could here it spin up and then reset the unit.
I rested the cage in the dash and the cd player worked at low volume. It was managing to earth through the cage. So i took it back out and someone had made a right hash of the wiring, so i re-did all the wiring in the power loom then put a big thick earth straight to a bit of metal inside the dashboard to get a good earth and it was fine after that no problem. The Alpine unit was taken out and sold when i wasn't using the car much and i fitted a low spec kenwood for the new owner and that's been running fine for a year or so now.
If the unit resets itself i would say its struggling to get enough power eg when a deep note or a symbol crash etc or just turning on if its a really bad earth.
If the amp cuts out i would expect the rest of the unit to keep working as standard and just the noise to cut out.
