Hi all,
Ever the optimist, I figured that spring is on its way, so I had the car detailed the other day. A detailer I know had some Zymol Royale (retailing at at £8700 a pot) which he offered to try on my car, so I couldn't resist!
I took some pictures on the day, so I thought I will show you the process.

The car was clean, but he gave it a good two-bucket wash with a soft mit to get rid of any grime. The wheels were done at the same time.
Then the car was clayed to remove any contaminants from the paint. Paint thickens measurements showed consistent thick paint (believed to be the original paint) everywhere.
This allowed a two stage correction with a machine polisher that got rid of 20 years worth of tiny scratches!
Zymol Royale was then applied - two layers, with an hour between them, to allow the first one to cure before the second was applied. By then it was raining again, so the car stayed in the garage (I was itching to take pictures of the whole car in natural light, but it was chucking it down). I only managed to take pictures of the back of the car - but it will give you an idea of the final finish.

All in all, I think it's worth doing this once every few years - to keep the paintwork in tip-top condition. The detailer admitted that moving from a "good" wax (say at £100 a pot) to these very expensive waxes does not make a huge difference to the appearer of the car, but it will last for 7-9 months (cheaper waxes might last 2-3 months). I must admit that I would not pay the extra £100 pound for the Royale, but as it was free...)

If you have the patience you can do this yourselves by hand. The detailer took about 9 hours to finish the car (started at 7am and finished at 4pm) - and I blame my bad back for not doing this myself :-)

PS I would put up more pics of the intermediate stages, but I can only attach 5 pics to a post.

From what I remember the car looked pretty good when I first saw it down at MBW a few years ago.

It now looks fantastic, L do love that colour on a Targa. 8) Roll on Spring. :)

Very very nice, both car and shine. I wonder what it is made of to justify the £8700 a pot price tag? Still it is no use trying for that in Scotland, unless you don't take the car out! Hope you get the weather soon.

I asked the same question, and apparently it has (one of the) highest concentration of Carnauba wax - it contains 70% Carnauba Sap/Wax by volume (Zymol Concours @ £179 for a 226 gram jar has 47% Carnauba wax, and Zymol Vintage @ £2180 has 61% Carnauba wax). Carnauba Wax (also called Brazil wax and palm wax), is produced from the leaves of the palm Copernicia prunifera, a plant native to and grown only in northeastern Brazil); it is used as a vehicle wax as it is one of the hardest naturally occurring waxes - harder than concrete in its pure form.

Google "Zymor Royale" for details.

Mind you, the price for one pot is a bit of a gimmick, as it includes free refills for life - so if you are a professional detailer, it might work out pretty cheap!

Looks absolutely fantastic. Love, just love the colour.

Did my Boxster today, and was surprised how easy it was. I put it down to good bodywork maintenance. OK, it could probably do with a special detail, but it is my daily driver.
Simple - 2-bucket wash, drying cloth, wax. Interior detailed, and leather treated. Tyres blacked, then blacked again. Windows done. Coolio. 911 next weekend.

nice job !
lovely colour too - bet it really shines out when the sun (eventually) hits it !

that price for the wax is just plain silly (there is also another wax that is even more expensive !)

Carnuba isn't even expensive - it's used all over the place in things you wouldn't even guess !

I think the term 'marketing' is used....

If you want an excellent wax, if that's your thing, that is 99% as deep a shine as the stuff on your car, is easier to apply and will last you forever, try Dodo juice supernatural.
It's also easier to apply...!

+ 1 for Dodo SN. Its is stunning stuff. Still not cheap, but will last years and is top notch.

Totally agree David - I would NOT pay for that, as I think it's a gimmick - but I was fortunate enough to get it included in the price, so I am not complaining.
I have heard good things about the Dodo juice supernatural - so I might try it.
