What are all these lights?

Post by Bow Runner »

I am confused.

The pop up lights on my UK LUX appear to operate as dipped beams via the super massive headlight switch to the side of the steering column, and as high beam headlights switched via the steering column stalk.

My fog lights on the front valance operate as fog lights via switch on the dash

The lights in the bumper come on as side 'parking' lights with the smaller bulbs in them lighting up via the super massive headlight switch but what are the larger bulbs in these lights for? The parts catalogue appear to say they are high beam lights. Are they an additional set of high beams? I have another switch on the dash next to the fog light switch. I had thought this was to switch on the rear fog lights.

Why do you need two sets of high beam lights?

On main beam the bumper light have a set of driving lights built in. They have a switch on the centre console to swith them on & off WHEN on main beam.

Why do you need two sets of high beam lights?
The answer is "flashing". The main purpose of the high intensity lights in the bumper is to give you some lights to "flash" when the light pods are down. The sequence of "pods up, flash lights, pods down" was considered too lengthy by Porsche.

Now, if you have a set of high intensity lights along for the ride you might as well switch them on along with the main headlights when you go to high beam, so that happens as well as a secondary function.

I don't have high beams in the pop-ups, only dipped.

I'm not sure that's normal though as yours seem to be wired up differently to mine. The high beams in the bumper on mine only work (including flashing) when the switch in the center console is on, I'm pretty sure that switch was missing on yours.

I get the feeling some tinkering has happened in the past.

No, that doesn't sound quite right, what bulbs do you currently have fitted, they should be H4s or similar. The 944 lights are bad enough when operating normally, without the pop-up high beams it must be quite entertaining in the dark!

What type/size of bulbs go into the bumper?

I replaced the pop up bulbs recently for some decent ones but the ones located within the bumper do appear a bit substandard.

I'm guessing yours is an oval dash? I was referring to the square dash cars.

My square dash doesn't have this switch. But it does have a peculiar non-functioning LED in the centre console where I imagine a switch could once have been. Other switches in this area are: rear wiper, wing mirror motor selector, headlight washers.

I'm sure my popups only have wiring for a single filament bulb. The bumper lights have two separate bulbs, one for side lights, the other only come on when I flash the lights, or go to full beam.

Despite this, I think the night illumination is easily good enough.

Mine does this too?

When I select main beam the pop ups go off and high beam lights come on in the bumper lights?

Then when I disengage main beam the pop ups come back on?
Surely that can't be right?

That does sound strange. The standard bulb on the pop ups for the 924/944 is a dual filament h4. Early 924 had a switch in the centre console to operate the bumper lights but for the later cars the bumper lights came on with the main beam in the pop ups.

So the pop ups should have main beam and dipped...?? And if the main beam insn't working it is likely the fuses?

As I commented on this thread years ago, my car is in much better working order now, so I can reveal the proper operation:

Pop-ups have dipped and main beam.
Bumpers have side lights and main beam.
If I pull the stalk gently, it flashes the main beams in the bumper (regardless of whether pop-ups are up or down).
I pull the stalk further, it clicks and holds all 4 main beams on, simultaneously switching off the dipped bulbs.
I also have fog lights in the lower lip of the bumper, operated by the centre console switch next to the cigarette lighter.

There was a crossover year for 924's and series 1 944's. Before this year, they have a switch in front of the ashtray that selects whether the bumper main beams also come on with the pop-up main beams.

I have had problems with some of the above lights not operating as described above. This is often due to dirty fuses and fuse contacts. It can also be due to worn or dirty contacts on the stalks and main light switch.
