I had a whirring noise coming from the front of the car. It sounded like a washing machine during a spin cycle.

I dropped it into Porsche Centre Tonbridge this morning, they diagnosed a knackered wheel bearing. I booked it in and was offered a 991 C4 for the Bank Holiday weekend to save me from bringing the car back next week for the repair.

I now want a 991

Always a danger when the car is in OPC for a repair. I've convinced myself that want a PDK car next.

You're not kidding, in terms of power there doesn't feel like there is much between them. The 991 feels so much tighter and larger inside.

No worries for me then, I usually drop mine into Abduls Auto's ,most they have offered me is a push bike, and no I am not tempted

Tis a slippery slope Mr Smallman, after I was loaned the Panamera I was looking at the piggy bank to see if it was a goer, no chance!

It's a difficult one, a lot of depreciation to write off on a hobby car @ 5000 miles a year. The 4S at 5 years old with 30,000 miles on the clock was worth 35% of its purchase price.

I think I have another couple of years with the 996, unless I find a bargain.

Probably a good plan, 991 will still be a good car in 3 years, and who knows you may be able to do a straight swap by then

Scary numbers I admit. One of the reasons I didn't buy a Cayman a few years ago when I was running newish cars. The strange thing is the Panamera seems to be holding its value better, when I looked the cheapest petrol was £50K+ unlike Cayennes which have cliff like depreciation.

Now hang on a minute, is this not the same Mr Smallman that told me only a couple of weeks that the new Boxster was the next car of choice!!!...

I certainly think the sums add up better with the Boxster than the 991. The difference in cost is significant. There is also talk of a lot of older 911 owners buying new Boxsters & Caymans rather than replacing with new 991s.

I can see why, the performance of the 3.4S is the same as my 996.

The cost saving new is about 40% and the depreciation is about the same in percentage terms.

Picked the 4S up this afternoon, the bearing had gone on the inside and sounded like a maracas when shook. It was very rusty, the service guys said its usually the front near side that fails.

No more screaming from the front and a clean bill of health ahead of the Euro Tour next month.

What was interesting was the direct comparison of the 991 to the 996. The seats in the 996 are a lot more comfortable, softer leather and more padding. It is probably the familiarity of the 996 but if felt smaller and more nimble on roundabouts and the twisty stuff on the way home.

I have read other reviews saying its becoming a bigger GT car. I think you've been lucky enough to drive them back to back and confirm it.
