Main Beam Lights Not Working - Help Please !

I have a 2004 Boxster 3.2 S and at the moment when I start up and then twist the light switch it switches on the sidelights but the next step does not switch main beam on. Although if I pull the light stalk the Headlights come on.

So, I tried several times in a different order including pulling it out for the Fog lights which also work OK and then all of a sudden the main beam worked again. A few days later it would not work again especially when I switch on the light switch as I start the engine on, almost simultaneously.

As they have worked on occasions the bulbs are OK but has anyone any ideas at all or a testing sequence to establish what it could be please?
