Idiots guide to distributor cap replacement on my 911 3.2

The rotor arm broke on Sunday and I was towed back home. The nice recovery man recommended that I replace the rotor arm AND distributor cap. I fitted the new rotor arm with the old distributor cap and she fired up ok. However when I fitted the new distributor cap she did not fire up again : (
The original distributor cap had a black rubber “jacket” over its exterior it but the replacement didn’t.
So I have the following questions:
1. Is the apparent difference in the distributor cap significant (even though the internals look the same)? My guess is that it does and I am going to go back to my supplier to get an exact replacement.
2. How can I check that I have the correct order when connecting the spark plug leads back up to the distributor cap? I labelled the connectors carefully but want to doubly make sure they are in the correct order.
3. Is there anything else I need to bear in mind when replacing the distributor cap?
Many Thanks for your help!
