Stopping 944 lights from popping up on sidelight setting

Mine is 87 so fits into this dim dip catagory, but not looking forward to trying to fix it ,can I just put in a relay from 1990+ or pre 86
Don't want to blow any bulbs cos just paid £93.00 for two piaa rally bulbs

Thanks! Better late than never indeed I was hoping there was a way of doing it without having to go under the hood though...
