Hi,

Old topic, but still relevant.

Looking for a recommendation for my 944S2.

No history of oil pressure issues, temperature issues or oil leaks.

Car gets driven about 2-3,000 miles a year. One or 2 track days. Also, when I take it out, it gets a good blast. By that I mean when it's up to temperature, I regularly gets revved up to 6,000rpm (never red lined) in the first 3 gears.

Oil changed every 12 months.

Happy to spend decent money on the right oil.

Having done lots of reading and still none the wiser, I'm thinking fully synthetic, either 10w40, 10w50 or even 10w60. The latter may give me too much oil pressure, along with all the problems that can bring, but as it tends to get worked quite hard, the heat would thin the oil anyway.

Cheers,
Bryan

Hi

As you have no pressure issues or leaks, I would go for a 5w-40.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS/CFS NT, Motul Sport/300V, Red Line and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XF Longlife, Fuchs GT1 XTL/Supersyn, Gulf Formula G/ULE, Shell Helix and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

Cheers

Tim

Engine oil specs are normally based on where you are driving, climate wise, not how.

My 944S2 ran 'ok' when I had it's first oil change, done by a reasonable garage - probably a bog standard 20-50 - but when I got a bit wiser, I replaced it with Shell Helix7 (10W40). Well, the change was quite dramatic - no more 'soggy' running etc. and I have been using it ever since - a once a year change...

Oil technology has come quite a long way - all those Ford GT40s, Porsche 917s at Le Mans were running heavy friction based engine oils - how quicker might they have been with the oils that are available today...?
