They have advised me that they do not automatically replace the pistons when fitting new liners, only if they are damaged. They also advised they will reuse second hand pistons if they are in better condition. Obviously this is to assist in keeping costs down. But a question for me is around the guarantee as this will only cover new components.....
But I will decide on each pistons fate when engine stripped & tolerances checked. This will be the same for the IMS & RMS.
Absolutely, i would image the pistons are nomally fine.
You wouldn't replace a wheel each time the tyre was worn

Depends on the engine, one of the issues allied to bore scoring is the piston coating wearing off. Also if they are steel liners then they may need a different ring type as I remember.

Indeed, your specialist will tell you if they are damaged but don't replace just for the sake of it if it's not necessary

These are the new Westwood cylinder liners that are used by Parrs Motorsport, that'll be used.
NEW Ductile Iron cylinder liners suitable for repairing damaged Alusil bores in 997 engines.
These New Ductile liners now have the cutouts and gudgeon pin hole already pre machined into the liners. The liners will only need to be bored and honed after fitment.
These liners are becoming very popular, with increasing numbers of cars suffering from scoring in the bores.
The liners will need to be fiited by a professional machine shop. You will not need to get special pistons or rings, as the original spec ones can be used with these Ductile liners.

No 6 will definitely be getting a new piston, looking at the bore scoring in the cylinder, the piston can possibly be ok. Just need to see the back of this flu and we should find out soon enough.

Both no. 4 & 6 pistons are scored, so going to have to replace pistons. All others are ok so they will have new rings & all will have new liners as required.
Other items identified as needed to be replaced:
Water pump
Brake engine tandem pump
Belt roller
IMS & bearing appear to be ok but still feel I will replace with uprated parts........as going to keep vehicle.
Struggling to upload pictures but will keep trying.

Been a while, but have been sorting a few things out.
Update is that all replacement parts have been ordered and received, these include IMS shaft and bearing although original shows no sign of wear I decided to play safe as the car has done 115k. Two new pistons and rings, along with 4 new sets of rings for the other pistons, belts, gaskets and a tandem pump cover from Ninemeister all received. May need to get the odd seal and the water pump but that should be it.
The six new liners are in the process of being fitted, which has taken a lot longer that first anticipated. But I'm assured this is due to the 8 stage cutting process to remove each liner. The engineers will not rush this through which is reassuring that they are doing a professional job.
The blocks will be ready midweek and then have to re-assemble and then remove / install new pistons in situ and new rings. Then reassembly begins and remap ECU for the fans to come on at lower temp as Richard stated earlier.
Once back have to complete running in process. Hoping to get back within next two weeks, otherwise going to struggle getting to my new job. But heyho will cross that bridge as and when.

Collected both completed cylinders banks, cam block & new parts & now rebuild commences. Hopefully will be completed within next 2 days. Ten need to re-install into car with gearbox.
I decided to run around as have 2 weeks off before I start my new job at JLR in Gaydon, which is why I need back ASAP. Also means techies can carry on working

Paul, I'll try to keep my head down & not piss him off then. I know a couple of directors there and many more who work all over various sites, but I never told a soul until I had been offered the role.
My missus over the last few weeks has kept telling me how much she likes the Panameras and that she would like one, or me. Then in her next breath says "oh us they are so expensive". I've already told her I was looking at a few before engine went kapput, so that's out of the equation for the short term.
They are so nice though.

Car is running, well RSR have completed rebuild & installed the engine & gearbox & all things on that front seem ok. However niggles surrounding brakes & pedal travel. New replacement tandem pump cover is thought to be the culprit. To be investigated further tomorrow.
