I found Pirelli very good when scrubbed in but when half worn the performance drops off markedly and the tyres track really badly. The other problem is the colossal wear rate, 2500 miles on the rear of the 996 and 12000 on Panamera (both cars supplied with them). Michelin PS2 lasted 15000 on rear of 996 and rears 20 000 miles on Panamera with Pilot Supersport , many times the mileage with the same driving style and an improvement in performance included. Granted they are about 20% more expensive but well worth it.

Bought a set of Pirelli P Zero rears today for the 996, £70 from here
Michelin are nearly £300 a set, so even if I replace them every year, still works out worth it.
