Dash/instrument lighting cluster upgrade

Post by jabriel »

Just like all other 944 owners, I'm not enjoying the dim lighting on the instrument cluster.

Years ago I found a link to a chap in the UK selling a lighting upgrade but I can't find his webpage any more. I can't remember the name of his company or his name for that matter. All I can remember is he is UK based. :( Has anyone else come across this site?

I did find this from another thread: http://www.jageng.com/garage9/product_i ... cts_id=151

Has anyone here bought from these guys? Did it work well? Is it worth it?

I also had a look at dash replacement page on Clarks Garage. I'm a little heavy handed and bearing in mind the screws and plastics are 20 odd years old, its likely ill break something. So this for the time being is not an option.

Are there any other options for improving interior lighting?

Hi Jab

I'm thinking about upgrading my dial lights too.

I fancy the white dials. Check out Sam's thread - White Dials.

Might be worth a peek

Thanks Alfie.

I can't find the thread you are referring to. Can you send me a link to the thread?

I found one thread but that only had a link to a set of white dials. My preference, assuming its possible, is to keep the original dials, and just get better/brighter (white) lighting to replace the original bulbs.

Am open to other suggestions though...

Sorry, just read your reply again. Think I found the thread you mentioned.

I'm going to keep the original dials and try to source a better lighting solution.

Has anyone here found a solution other than changing the dials?

A few options with the gauge lighting. You can just fit replacement LED bulbs. Very simple & they work as they have a higher light output than the original bulbs. You can replace the perspex widgets. Did this on mine with ones cast in resin with LEDs inside them. More work. You need to use the dimmer afterwards. Not sure it's really worth the effort. Or you can buy an LED light string from car builder solutions or similar. Use that to replace the widgets. Probably simpler. Worst bit is removing the instrument cluster which is a bit of a pain. Easier in warmer weather. There are three clips to undo by braille behind the console to remove the cluster. You don't need to remove the wheel. Comes out fine just twisting it. Watch out for a small bulb that illuminates the dash vents. It needs to be unclipped. Good luck. :)
