Hi
Some of you may remember the problems I had with boost levels on my 944 turbo, got it back with new cycling valve fitted it is now completely stock......
It boosts to 1.8 bar in 4th gear but in 1st and 2nd I can not get it over 1.1 ..is this normal??

Is this a sign that the wastegate spring is tired and its losing boost???

Is that 1.8 on the stock boost gauge or have you got an aftermarket gauge?

The stock gauge measures atmosphere and will show 1.8 at about 0.8 bar of boost. I think that level is stock for a 250bhp turbo. If you are getting 1.8 bar of boost in a stock engine then something will go pop very soon.

IMO Somethings not right as if you can get 1.8 in 4th you should be able to see that in lower gears, the dash boost pressure guage is crap mind you.
Can you get a decent guage and break into one of the vacuum lines using a t piece to get a more reliable reading, does it feel as though it is boosting and producing power in the lower gears ?
Ignore the guage and use the arris boost guage, if it is pulling like a train when you floor it ignore the dash guage ?

No, not normal. You can see full boost in 3rd gear and get close in 2nd too if you are going for it.

Could be wastegate related or maybe a boost leak. Bit odd that the boost returns in 4th. Duff gauge? Is it pulling well in 2nd/3rd or just 4th when the gauge shows more boost? I would get an aftermarket gauge as Frenchy says if it's holding back in lower gears.

My boost gauge shows just over 2 bar when on full boost. This appears to be slightly higher than it should be on stock wastegate/chips. I do have a MAF though but the boost was the same with the old AFM? Never tested in on aftermarket gauge but it read the same with the old rev counter/boost gauge that got replaced.

I've driven my mates standard 220 and it peaks at 1.8 bar on gauge then drops off after 5k rpm. Mine doesn't seem to drop off right through the range although I have the bigger 26/8 turbo on mine.

the car seems to pull well the garage tells me it's faster than another one they have in on a regular basis......but I just seems wrong!

I was after getting a TRU BOOST gauage which also doubles as a controller but want the car working perfectly before I do any Mods,

I have fitted the Lindsey Racing vac kit so no leaks in the lines (hopefully). It still has the Promax stage 1 chip installed but not the fuel regulator, boost enhancer etc....would this cause problems??

None of that should cause a problem. If it pulls well forget about it until you get a reliable gauge fitted.

Make sure you jot down the exact times your garage has the car next so you can appeal any speeding fines!!

It looks a fantastic piece of kit, just couldn't imagine it in the cockpit of a 944 though! However, if your after functionality over originality then it looks the business!

I think I'll eventually convert the cubby hole under the stereo to be an aftermarket gauge location on a bit of plastic shaped to take up the gap for boost and AFR gauge.

Looks good IMO. I think the LED's moving all the time would be distracting though. Certainly cheaper than my AVC-R and boost gauge, but if you planning on keeping the car standard you can get a very good boost gauge for less than £50.

That's just what I did with my gauge, using a radio blanking plate. It's only plastic but has a couple of clips on the back that hold it in just like the cubby hole. It needed a little trimming but was only £2.99

Yip, exactly what I had in mind Dave. I will look out for one.

Cheers

My idea was to mount the TRU boost in the cubby hole ...this would allow me to drive normally with relatively low boost but then mount an engine start type button in the top of the gear stick to operate the scramble feature giving me boost when I need it (and its a bit James Bond).

Wire it up to an ejector seat instead, that would be even more James Bond

TBH i would not be keen on runnimg a chip and taking the boost up without fitting a 3 bar fuel pressure regulator.............TOP TIP take off the FPR ad put it in a vice between 2 suitable sockets and sqaush it slightly, this puts more pressure on the internal spring which in turn hikes the available fuel pressure.

How do you know when you are going to get 3 Bar though? A new 3 bar FPR is about £60 and the second hand one I bought off ebay was about £5 with postage, so is it worth the risk or is really easy to do?
