Just had another look and I think you should ask about the exhaust ( looks a bit big ) and the wheels ( what size are they ).

Isn't the front no plate in the wrong place, possible front end bump ?

No answer as yet to my email.

I didn't notice the exhaust, glad you pointed it out. The wheels I am not too keen on, might change them anyway but will ask.

Didn't notice the number plate either. Looking at others it's def in wrong place. Though did a check and never been recorded as being in an accident.

Has had 13 registered owners though. Does that seem a bit high?

13 owners is maybe a bit higher than average, but 13 careful owners are better than 1 careless owner  - you need to look at the actual condition of the car itself and any history that's with it.

The number plate positioning is a bit unusual, and probably not how it was originally, but doesn't mean it's been in an accident; it may have been moved after being resprayed due to stone chips or simply because one of the previous owners preferred the plate to be perpendicular to the horizon rather than on the underside of the curved nose.

The RMB (probably, looking at the diameter of the exhaust), wheels and steering wheel may suggest that one of the previous owners was more interested in "show" over "go", but that's a huge generalisation - everyone is entitled to change their car to suit their own taste and they might have regarded those changes as the final cherry on the top once everything else was working perfectly.

At the risk of sounding like a stuck record, you really won't know for yourself unless you go and look at the car in person or get a representative to do it for you (especially if you're buying from a dealer).

The best advise everyone is giving is you MUST drive these cars yourself first before you make a choice. Going on looks alone is fatal for a 928 purchase. There are always lots of cars around that are priced high to give the impression that they are a "Good Buy". Price is almost irrelevant when buying a 928, its the condition of the car when you see it up close, the service history and the feel you get from the previous owner that you must reflect on before you even get into the car.

As it has been mentioned many times before...once you get into almost any good condition 928 and drive it your brain goes all mushy and you become like a child in a candy shop! These cars can have a lot of hidden problems that you need to see and judge for yourself in person. There are lots of owners who will help you and even come and inspect a car with you both on this forum and the 928.org forum.

Suggest you grab a cheap flight over one weekend and see a few cars and have a drive with a few owners in their 928's so you get a good feel for what is in store before you buy.

If you want to use a specialist - then call Paul Anderson in Stroud and get him to check a car out for you. He is definately your first port of call amongst others.

If you do fly over to Manchester or Birmingham I would be happy to give you a ride in mine & check out any car you wanted to view in the local area's. The Cental TIPEC region have a strong 928 presence with plenty of support help & advise if you need it.

Happy Hunting

Steve

Hi :)

Thats very good advice from Steve....

I totally agree with it.

If you find any cars in the South, I will happily come see them with you as well, although as I work 6 days a week it will have to be on a Sunday, but let me know if you need me....

I think to be honest you WILL find a 928 owner almost anywhere in the UK who will come with you because 928 owners tend to be a special sort of person who all love 928s and will encourage anyone to buy one :)

All the best Brett :)

Thanks for all the advice guys.

The car I was emailing about seems to have been sold. So I am back looking at the one I liked originally in Sutton Coldfield. Does anyone know this dealer/car?

http://www.deansofsutton.co.uk/used-car ... 6367624413

I will phone tomorrow and ask the usual questions (belts etc).

If anyone is in the area who could give it a look over, I would greatly appreciate this and obviously pay them for it.

Someone who knows what they are looking at, would make a lot more sense then me flying over to look at it.

Bursting to get one of these cars

I couldn't agree more with Brett's comments.

The 928 owners are a great bunch to get help from. I for one couldnot be a 928 owner without all the help from the 928 forums and 928 owners. Its a great wealth of knowledge amongst the 928'ers.

And Brett does hold the record for the fastest land speed recorded from a 928's....without serving food and no parachute! 8) :D

Cheers
Steve

That car looks familiar???
I remember seeing it a few months ago on Pistonheads or autotrader when I was looking for my replacement 928. Non standard cup3 alloys so they will not be the correct offset but looks OK. I guess you would have to get a good look at it and see what it drives like. Finding out the previous owner would be a good idea too. Try posting on 928.org and asking anyone there if they know the car.

Paul Bird - TIPEC Central RO is close to Sutton COldfield and is a 928 owner too - he may know the car? I will ask him at our monthly meeting tomorrow down near Sutton Coldfield.

Will let you know.

Steve

Hi Steve,
Would be great if you could do that. Thanks very much.

I have posted a thread on the 928.org site (I hope lol). All being well I might get a response there :D

Hi Everyone

I am also a newbie and looking forward to entering the 928 foray. I am hoping someone can recommend a source of expertise in the London area as I am thinking of buying a 1990 S4 with 112k on the clock. It does have service history incl cambelt at 103k (but not the water pump??) and the torque tube was replaced along with a gearbox refurb in Jan 2010. It covered 90k from 1990 to 2002 and then 23k over the next 8 years. It looks clean enough with some wear to the piping in the drivers sport seat. The asking price is £7500 - does this seem reasonable.

Any help or advice would be gratefully received. Thanks

HI Barnsy9

Same advise goes to yourself - have a good look on the 928.org web site a7 forum and ask around on there as well. YOu will find an abundance of folk around London area to help.

thanks Steve

I have noted that there is an 8 year gap on the service history from 95 to 2003. Is there a central database that holds service records from franchised dealers that I can check?

Thanks
Jonathon

If it was serviced by OPCs then I believe there is a database, you can ask your local OPC but you probably have to pay for the info - can't hurt to ask and see how kindly disposed they are.

One would have thought that if it had been serviced by Porsche then the car's owners would have bothered to keep a record of it, are there no service stamps in the handbook, or do they stop after 1995?

So, is this the one or did you find another one that looked so good you didn't dare delay in case someone else snapped it up?

Let us know what it's like when you've got it home - we always like to hear how thrilled people are to get their new 928 :hello1: .
