Running a 3 phase lift from a domestic single phase supply

Post by DavidL »

short of installing 3 phase power, which I'm not, is this doable or not?
If so how and how much?

Short answer is no, it's not doable.

There is one of these under the Ferrari 550 in the garage,

It is single phase and works well. Don't know what you want to do? But I'm thinking of getting one next year.

Yes you can with an inverter, assuming you've enough current to run it. It may be better & cheaper to change the motor for a single phase one. Ramps generally use little motors so no problem.
Quick google gives this I can give you some more names later when I get sorted. http://www.isomatic.co.uk/3phConverter.htm

I have one of these and has been superb, its portable so dont need to tie up floor space.Only down side if car very low (as mine) may need to put scaffold planks down to get clearance to get on

grbspeedster - that's ideal, can you tell us the make and model please? And why isn't your garage white-washed and carpeted? It's the law if you live in Cheshire!

£100 for a cheap inverter, change motor connections from star 415 volt to delta 220volt and away you go.

Invertors seem to be rated in hp for some reason and the motors at around 2.5kw. So that would suggest a 3.5 hp invertor.
Most of what I have read suggests an invertor that runs double the output you require so around 7hp.
At that level they are rather more than £100 - enough to make it not viable to buy an old ramp at a few hundred (plus replacing bits, delivery etc etc) against a purpose built single phase one at a little over 1000.
Or am I missing something?

Nope you could well be right. Hence better to change the motor for a single phase one but it still may need a dedicated 30A supply. I think the hydraulic ramps are lower power than the rope type.
But now prices of new domestic ones have come down then that would be a better option.
