Haven't driven many new cars (excepting hire cars for work).
But in comparison with my previous 'retro ' cars (about 14 Sciroccos (MK1 and Mk2), a MK2 CRX, 2*924, 924 turbo, Matra Murena) - the 944 is nearest to the Matra in presence and communication.
I had the 2.2S Murena (144 bhp) model - which was quick (but thirsty) - the 944 is not as fast (the Matra was a lighter car), but I get a similar feeling about it on the road and feedback from it.
The 924 turbo was a very quick car . i had the series 2 and it was still faster than alot of cars i seemed to see on the roads - but couldn;t get used to the aggressive turbo lag - foot down, wait, wait,wait...no power,no power - then hit 3K revs and awaaay you go...!
Sorry to offend anyone reading - but didn;t like the CRX (it was the 16v not VTEC model) - just found the whole driving experience a bit null - super engineering and revvy engine, but for me, poor feedback. The 924's are communicative (but slower and noisier) - quite fun on a nice B road - and sciroccos I found to be pretty good all rounders - but after 10 years or so with them, I wanted a change....
I did find though that the CRX was the only car which has had people leave notes on it asking to buy it (even had one kid chase me up a street and ask at a junction if it was for sale!). The 924/944's still turn heads (at least where I live!) - and again are not a common sight anymore.
Am beginning to wonder what the 944 turbo is like....
