I have a knocking noise from the osr and I have replaced both inner and outer cv joints only to find the noise is still there.I was convinced that it was a cv joint
I find no movement in the rear shock or the short stabiliser bars and wonder if anybody can help me please?
The noise is more of a dull doink doink noise if this helps.

My guess would be the exhaust box knocking on the floor. Does it make the noise when you push up and down on the rear wing? If you can get underneath it whilst someone bounces it, you might be able to track it down.

Don't think I will take that job......

Or the exhaust hitting the ARB,my Dansk needed some persuasion to not make this racket!

If I bounce the suspension i get no noises and if i pull on the rear shock and arms i get no play that is there.
Really bugging me now

Have you done/checked all 4 CV joints? Are the driveshafts themselves worn? Is it whilst driving normally or just over bumps?

Iam happy with the driveshaft side of things.I get the noise only occasionally over bumps and if i was to do a full circle turn left or right I get the noise more often.
It has occasionally come when I have gone forward then reversed into a parking space.

These things can take a lot of tracking down. Problem is that sometimes the sound can travel and you might be looking at the wrong end of the car. Does it occur more frenqently when turning left or right.

Could be a suspension bush or bearing. You could try and track down any play by the use of a siutable leaver (be gentle though).

How about gearbox or engine mounts, have you looked that them? Get the car up in the air and give everything a good shake (but be careful it doesn't fall on you!)

I get knocking on either left or right turns about equal.If it was play in the top rear suspension could that cause enough movement for the noise i wonder.
Gearbox mountings i havent thought of i must admit.

I know this is a simple one but since you've looked at everything else I thought I'd share. Mine had a knocking while going round right hand bends. I thought it was the exhaust but it turned out to be the bar at the back of the luggage blind knocking on the edge of the hatch frame. The 20 year old elastic had finally just given enough to let it touch. I'm not trying to be condesending or over simplify a problem but if you've had a look at all the suspension it's worth checking that everything is secured in the boot. Battery, jack, spare wheel, etc.

Sounds like the wheel bearing to me. Easy to check, just jack up the offending corner and grab the wheel top and bottom and waggle. Rear should have virtually no movement.

Otherwise, could be something like the brake caliper, disc or pads. For instance, a pad pin has come loose? Anyway, brakes are always worth checking.

Further checks today
1.eliminate rear shock (after replacement)
2.no play in rear antiroll bar
3.short links have no play
The rear driveshafts do have play going into the diff(is this normal I wonder)and is there any adjustment if this isnt a daft question
I dont know where to go with this now or do I just accept and put up with it

A bit of gearbox backlash is normal and I suspect that this is what you are describing with the driveshaft play. I would still favour the exhaust knocking on the floor. How about a loose battery? I suggest you work through all the previous "little" suggestions that are on this thread and see if you can find any movement.

Try dropping the seats and taking out the sound deadening and carpets. Does this help to track it down? Keep on with it, I am sure that you will find it eventually, and just keep smiling
