Hello to all,

I'm assuming that many of you find it irritating sometimes when you open the door of your 928 and it swings back onto your legs before you have exited. Thinking of buying these from 928 Motorsports in the USA that claim to fix this problem. Has anybody cured this problem another way?

I fitted new door stays both sides (Porsche parts) so get the full functionality where door clicks into 3 positions. They work so well they will hold the door on steep slope. Will be good for at least another ten years. Parts for both sides cost about £35 altogether from US (haven't checked UK pricing). If you get the original stay, make sure you also get new support gaskets (rubber rectangle).

Have seen good reports of the items you're considering, and I think I'm correct in saying they don't require removal of door card to fit. Take a few minutes each side whereas doing the original stays more than an hour each side (but a nice job as 928 jobs go, though you need patience putting bolts back by feel). Likely they will not last anywhere near as long (I think they are thin Titanium) but dead easy to fit. Cost a little less than the original parts option.

However an expert guy on rennlist claims he's fixed the door stay problems on 3 928s he's had just by thoroughly cleaning all the old hard grease and crud that builds up on the stays. I'm dubious as over time the metal "bumps" on the original stays wear, which is why you lose the proper action.

So you have plenty of options. I'm a bit anal about original parts so went Porsche, but not everyone as fussy!

Why not just buy another check strap from OPC @ £14.99, that one has lasted 20 odd years...

To replace with original parts, did you have to strip the door ?

Yes Brett, you need to remove door card and peel away membrane as the check mechanisms bolt inside doors. Removing cards is a pretty easy job though. While card was removed I lubricated lock mechanism, and if you wanted to replace speakers this would be good opportunity.
