Hello all, im the new boy and have owned my first porsche for sll of about 16 hours.

So wheels, these 15" teledials are suitably retro' but balloons for tyres just wont do what can i buy that fits directly? my backgroung is BMW where taking parts from other models is the norm BBK from M5 etc and other series wheels.................

So what fits and what doesnt? what are your own experiences? any pics, knowledge and offers of wheels appreciated.

On a 89 2.7 the world is your oyster. Any late Porsche wheel such as 996, 944, 968, boxster wheel would fit. Subject to several advisory points. Porsche only approved up to 17" wheels & that with 968 castor mounts & geometry changes. In fact some go to 18" with varied results. You will need decent shocks & bushes & geometry that is spot on! Max width on the rear is generally 10" but even that may take some arch rolling.

17" is probably best and as said seems most wheels from boxster to 911 cup wheels will fit. I've got 18" on mine but as said you WILL need the 968 castor mount and wheel alignment doing whichever size you go for. If you're down South way then JMG has got loads of wheels going s/h or new and can advise on the offsets etc which I could never understand, mental block sort of thing

17" Cup 1 wheels if you can find them are the mutts ! if your car has ABS which i suspect is the case you will need the later offset wheels, these really pack the arches out.
You may have issues with the rear wheel arches they are rolled as standard on post 87 turbos, and though it sounds weird sometimes they only catch on one side, you could always go to 245 rather than 255 rears, in my experience 18" wheels ruin the handling though they look the part.
I personally think that the 944 does not suit later twist and boxster wheels but each to their own.
I have 17" Cup 1 (genuine) on my Turbo S and i have a set for my 220, though i presently have the Turbo 16" deep dish teledials fitted as i am want to keep the standard look.
I recommend Toyo T1 R Tyres.
Would love Fuch for my 220 but funds not in place at the moment.

Just for clarity you can have ABS offset without having ABS. My car is an 87 with ABS offset but doesn't have ABS.

offsets if you know them, or which models i can take them from directly, is it 5 x 130? so VW fitments might work?

Then we can start talikn about lowering

On an '89 offset should be 52.3, personally wouldn't go above 17" and if you can find them cup 1's look the biz, but thats only my opinion

The only other vehicles ive managed to find fitted with 5x130 rims are vans ie merc sprinter/Vw LT35 and the fiat ducatto.

Nope Porsche wheels fit VWs with adapters. So only Pork wheels will fit, should be plenty around.

then can I start talking about, ruined ride, potholes and broken suspension?

after breaking the suspension on a e34 5-series that was lowered and on 17's i decided to leave the '44 as it was designed, and am happier every time it hits a bump.

ofc if you just want to 'croooz' at 5mph down the main street go for it ;p

I didnt say 'big' wheels i think more than a 17 looks wrong if anything, and i definately dont 'cruise'.

How did you break suspension on an E34?

My advice would be stop trying to rush. You can lower a 944, but Id ask you why you want to? My point here is that you dont really know what youre doing (and youve only just bought the car) and beyond the fact that youre almost certainly going to make the car worse, it will take a major financial commitment. The car uses torsion bars at the rear and it doesnt have access holes like a 911, so youre looking at hours and hours of work, including removing the transaxle and the rear axle, in order to re-index the torsion bars.

Remember too that there are frequent posts from new owners, asking how to bling up their 20+yr old cars, so members can be short in their reply.

Change the wheel by all means: Porsche offered a Momo as a cost option (ironically seeing that it cost about £100 all-in with the boss when a Porsche lozenge wheel was listed at closer to £1000), but Id suggest 16" wheels in an approved fitment size (7" & 8" or 7.5" & 9"). Id leave the suspension well alone, because youll only spoil the handling: unless youre prepared to commit well over £1,000 to new dampers and a good deal more on ARBs, bushes, strut mounts, geo adjustment and labour (inc the re-indexing mentioned earlier).....
