I was under the wheel arches today having a look at the brake because they haven't felt as good lately Sure enough I saw some of the dreaded white corrosion under the caliper plates one one side and the disk is starting to look a bit rusty on the inside. I suppose it was only a matter of time before plate lift caught up with me.

I briefly considered it a good excuse for upgrading to big red or black calipers but thought that the difference between them and my M030 calipers probably wasn't worth the effort. So I'm looking for a recommendation or two on who's best to refurb them and an idea of cost if anyone knows. Somewhere in the North West would be preferable if there is anywhere.

Also noticed a couple of small holes in the back box while I was under there so that's going to need doing too in the next couple of months! :(

I had the caliper plate lift on my old 944 turbo SE and had this corrected at an independent specialist just prior to selling the car. The work isn't particularly hard, but is time consuming and hence i was charged a good few hundred pounds. About £600 from memory.
Stainless steel plates are still available from OPC and indie.

I seem to recall 9M in Warrington are good at this job and can finish your calipers in any colour you want. http://www.ninemeister.com/

As for the back box, there is a stainless steel one for sale in the 'For sale' section on here for a reasonable price.

Cheers Rav,

I just give them a call and they said I'm looking at about £200 +VAT a caliper for a complete refrub. At that sort of price I'm tempted to see if I can get a second hand set of Big Blacks. I might ring around to see if there's anywhere a bit cheaper.

Will have a look at the back box.

Do them yourself Dave, they are not hard to do! I think a DIY guide may be in order. What style of calipers is it you have, big pistons with the integrated dust seals or the smaller diameter ones with the rubber dust boot?

Quite a few guys on the 968 forum use Classicar Automotive to re-furb their calipers, but the price is still around £200 per caliper. They do however powder coat the body and replace all of the other components, seals, pistons, bleed nipples and decals with new.

I think ECP also offer replacements on an exchange basis for around £150 each.

Thanks again for the suggestions

I have the M030 calipers and just thought I'd save myself some hassle and get someone else to do them, but at £200 a corner I might just have a go myself. No idea how I'd get the plate bolts out though. I had a bit of a go at the weekend and they are very stuck.

RPM said they would have to get back to me with a price as their computers had gone down and they needed to double check the prices of seals etc. I'll hopefully get a call tomorrow but they are about 150 miles away.

I haven't heard of Classicar Automotive. I'll have a look for their number.

ECP (Euro Car Parts?) I had a look at the website but they don't list the M030 calipers.

Big red do all the seals for them I think. I have a set of M030 calipers to do so will check with them for seals and boots,

Did one of mine over the weekend.I did the front ones about 5 years ago and the time has come to do the rears as the amount of brake pad backing plate I was having to grind off to get the pads to fit was getting silly!!
Took me about seven hours for the one caliper using a combination of pin punches to tap the cap headed bolts holding the slider plates round and mig welding the sheared ones.I tried to weld 10mm nuts onto the cap heads , but didnt seem to work.Having cleaned the corrosion away , it was still a bit of a ba*****d to fit the new slider plates as they seemed a very tight fit.The slider plates are about £16 each ( two per caliper ) and are only available from OPCs - tried to get them direct from Brembo , but they just keep refering you to the OPCs.There was an article in 911 world some time ago , but as I recall it didnt give me any new ideas on how to do it.
Just got the offside rear to do.............................. :twisted:

Ring Exeter Porsche for the current price on a new set of Big Blacks from a 928GTS. When I bought mine they were £450 the pair.

New 944 Turbo M030 callipers were then £400 each!!!!

Did mine last year, chiselled the tighter allen bolts round to slacken after using a dremmel to cut a notch in them for the chisel. Otherwise I cleaned all the muck out of the head with jeweler's screwdrivers to make sure the allen key was well seated. Sometimes I needed an extension bar, but generally worked well. Cleaned off corrosion from the calipers, spray primed them, then used black hammerite smooth x2 coats. As for the plates - they are stainless steel so used the dremmel again with a wire brush attachment to clean them up. I then spread a thin amount of the gasket blue (to act as another sealing layer between alloy and stainless). Got 8 new allen bolts from a local nuts and bolts place called 'Teesside fasteners' for buttons - I think about £1.50 / £2. I have since replaced 1 of the pistons (4 per caliper) and the 2 seals as there was a little bit of corrosion around the outer dust seal - changed it all just to be sure (new piston and 2 seals was £35-£39)- again sealed any exposed alloy with hammerite. Job done for several more yrs. I must say using an EZ bleed makes life a lot easier as I can never get anyone willing to pump the pedal in my house. The fact that they have a bleed nipple on both sides really helps - on my vx220 (lotus elise in disguise) you have to remove the caliper and turn it upside down then back and repeat several times to expel any air in there - a right PITA.
Give it a go yourself - you can't beat the feeling of satisfaction when it's all done - that and you know it's done properly.

Hi,

If you can get hold of a copy of 911 & Porsche World, Issue 195, there is a 4 page article on 944 S2 disc and brake pad replacement with colour photo's. Might be worth a look. You can buy back issues online from CH Publications. It was a very good article.

The article doesn't cover caliper refurb'ing though.

Can anyone help me identify my calipers? I have got MO30 upgrade on my 944T 1989 but the calipers are yellow and I am not sure if they are 928 calipers. The discs are 964T 3.6. Is there anywhre I can view calipers or are there identification numbers on the calipers?

Caliper lift also afflicts Brembo-equipped 928s.

Heat from a small blowtorch would be very effective in breaking down corrosion in threads of the bolts holding in side plates. Hitting them with impact driver will also break corrosion in same way as the very reliable dremel/chisel method referred to above. If none of these methods worked (unlikely) then you can always drill off the heads with drill diameter slightly larger than shaft of bolt.
