what i was trying to say, or rule out was which 16v head it had. e.g the head is a 2.5 16v and not a 3ltr 16v. if the 16v rocker cover heads are the same on the face, are they the same all the way though? and there fore compatable with eachother? and if 3ltr/2.5 16v head head fits a 3ltr block, which someone mention was the same as 2.7 block then a 2.5/3ltr head would also fit 2.7 block?

at the start of thread it says i brought 944S, so maybe its just an /S with some engine work rather then a 944 with an engine swap? e.g. if the tach been swaped? surly with the right ecu the redline would be the same 6800, and wouldnt require a tach swaped, the needle would just run in 2 the redline?

ecu isnt diffluct 2 remove, took me about 5mins when i re chiped mine, not a very comfortable 5mins. i lyed arcoss from the drivers seat. legs out the door, head in the passanger foot well. there a woooden plate then a metal brack.

are the fule injectours 4 the S the same as 2.5 8v?

i would sirguesst find out which engine the car orginaly came with. was the 2.7 modle avable yet? D reg 1986?

2.7 was only made for one year, '88/89 but could have been retro fitted, can't understand a lux being turned into an S, usually the other way 'round due to cam chain issues

Sorry about the delay in getting back to the forum - I had to drop everything and move to Amsterdam for 3 weeks for work (I'm an IT Consultant). Back now though and finally got a good mechanic to look at my 944S to diagnose the problem. There are many botched repairs, one on top of the other - but fundamentally its electrical. His best guess at this stage is that this model year saw the introduction of an additional circuit which automatically produced more revs when the power steering was fully engaged. This badly designed circuit wasnt fused properly and was prone to overheating/fires. Half of my wiring loom isnt really a loom at all but is a botched/taped set of miscoloured single wires repaired after fire damage. At least 2 of the engine earths are missing and the flywheel sensor wiring is damaged. Some of the Diagnostics ports are damaged / missing and someone has also broken off the sealed breather tube housing the oil filler cap which is introducing unmetered air into the system.

He has suggested a "back to basics" logical approach which starts with replacing the loom. As he does this he will partially strip the engine and list other running repairs as he goes (Vac tubes wrongly connected/ brackets missing etc).
He actually says the engine will probably adjust to run with bigger bore/pistons (at least give 90% performance) but at the moment he cannot diagnose anything until he can be sure the electrical connections are there and working......

It seems logical to me. Anyone know where I can get a cheap wiring loom for a 1986 M/Y 944S ?

oh that is exactly what happened to my old S, the best part of the loom burnt out.

Two options or a combination of them. Porscheapart Ramsbottem, (dismantlers) will sell you a decent undamaged loom. Then the engine harness can be bought new from Lindsey Racing in the States. I've got there injector harness on mine & its a top quality job in fire proof over braid. New connectors & not too difficult to fit. Not a bad price either though the exchange rate doesn't help. They also sell silicon vacuum pipe kits which I can recommend. Before you start make sure you know what your letting yourself in for. DIY isn't so bad but using a sparky to do this it may be cheaper to break it & buy a good one. (What I should have done. ) No guarantees with what else you will find when the wirings sorted. I think that there was a recall on the 944S to sort the wiring to the power steering pump. Check on the VOSA website. Don't know if Porsche would still repair the wiring now if yours has missed out?

I think that it only applies to the 944S as this is the only one with an electrical connection to the power steering pump. As far as I know, the same power steering pump is fitted across all 944/968 models except the "S". My 968 is running a 944S2 pump and the only connections to it are hydraulic.

I ran my car up the ramps today to have a quick look and found two spare wires from the loom going nowhere - right next to the steering pump which has no electrical connections on it.....could be the pump was replaced for a different model. I'm going to the Porsche main dealer tomorrow to see if I can get a part number for the engine harness (expect it to be £££s from there) and a wiring diagram for the 944s (the haynes manual I inherited is for the 8V cars). Feel like I'm honing in on the main cause of the problem now..

I really think you should go back and check your ECU part number as Howard said. It would rule that out and wouldn't cost a penny to check.

Sorry - you are quite right - asking for help then not taking the advice. The DME is indeed a 944S part - serial number is "0261 200 080" - its even called a Type - 944S on the Bosche label. Lots of after factory additions coming out of the wiring loop, cd amplifier bolted there too. I just looked up the price for an engine wiring harness - £971 from Porsche! There are plently on ebay stripped out but they are all S2 or Turbo. Still searching the net for a wiring diagram but I have downloaded a really good parts list with GA drawings.

I Finally got this problem sorted (thanks to Martin Browne a Porsche Independent specialist in Meridan). He replaced the engine wiring harness, also 2 or 3 engine sensors (2 anti-knock sensors) plus a flywheel timing sensor. The car flies along now. I have another small problem though for which I will start a new thread.
