I had my belts rollers and water pump replaced about 10000 miles ago, and the front seal is leaking and was missed, iv got 16v 2.5 and it sounds like the chain is hiting the head. This was also what a specailst at chilham motor sports told me today when I went 2 get 2 sun roof cogs. Which striped out today.

So I'm looking 2 have the chain and tensoner replaced engine reslead, and the belts replace while there off, due 2 the chance off oil contamtention and see as I'm paying 2 have them removed anyway. We didn't get round 2 talking prices as I had already kept them open 30mins longer.

Anything else I should get done? The oil leak I have is hardly noticeable no drips and not a great deal of lost thought use.

Terry, was this at Chilham? The oil seal shouldn't be leaking, the kit costs 52 quid & saves having to strip absolutely everything off again so wasn't wise. If you can see visible oil then the actual leak will be worse, most will be in the belt cover. The oil will contaminate the belts, so shouldn't be left for any time. The chain can be done as a separate job pads are around 20 quid or so & the chain is 20 stripping the lot off will be 2-3 hours labour. Even if the belts were done 10K ago I'd replace them. So assuming no top hats or idlers/tensioners needed then 50 quid for belts.
You could do the whole lot yourself TBH. The whole job is a days work.

Chilham motor sports was were I was going 2 have the work done. This isn't really something I could do myself on own the road side. But if your more then capable ? I would be extmelly gratefull, insurance is also due, which unfuntely is like a whole months wages. Due 2 having my liscence 4 10months.

Hi iv had a quote for 600-700 would it be worth getting the engine mounts changed as well?

This is just for chain tensoner pads and chain, engine seal and replace just the cam belts and blance belt.

The pump and rollers were all replaced with the 1st cambelt change.

Jim when you say do it your self, don't you need a tool 4 the belts? Engine lift 2 get 2 seals? I really don't no. Iv got a haynas manual. But that's about it.

This is just for chain tensioner pads and chain, engine seal and replace just the cam belts and balance belt.

Jim when you say do it yourself, don't you need a tool for the belts? Engine lift to get to seals? I really don't know. I've got a Haynes manual. But that's about it.

Haynes manual is crap, covers a very early US spec 944!
Download the full pork one from here http://www.promaxmotorsport.com/
All you really need is a flywheel locking tool & a Krikit belt tension gauge. Available from Arnworx & do a google for the Krikit gauge. One on fleabay for 99p 220624700274
Just about to use mine when work quietens down otherwise you could borrow mine. You may need a puller to get the pulleys off to do the seals but they are 15-25 quid from Halfords.
Engine mounts are fiddly but can be done yourself. I bottled it & got Northways to do mine as mine was a daily driver at the time.

Yup all the seals done while in the car, Balance shafts easy, cam & crank a bit fiddly. TBH 600-700 isn't bad, depends exactly what they are doing. The pads & chain are around 50quid, plus gaskets & other bits, belts 50ish, seals without top hats are 140 or so. The rest for labour.

great jim

thanks, iv got 2 drop it off there 4 MOT thursday, so i need 2 dicied weather 2 do it myself or have them do it. guess it will all depend on what and if it fails.

how much more would i expect 2 replace engine mounts and front wheel bearings? i have the bearings all ready.

would it be a lot off work 2 have them remove the manfold as well?as while the rocker cover is off i was going 2 get it power coated, would be nice 2 do the manfold as well.

I remember when I had my first cheepo 944 turbo ( which I really miss) and it needed a front seal kit and belts rollers. I shopped around for quotes and the cheapest I could get it done at a respected place was 650 so it sounds like you have a reasonable quote if you go down that line.

Best of luck

Mas

well iv got a 16v chain and tenssourner of a s2 which i got when i brought the front end, the pads look new with little wear and the chain seems quite tight.

the pads have the part number 928, so would i be right 2 think these have been changed at some point? is this a hard job 2 do, remove and replace in the opssite 2 removeal? thinking i may just swap over the tenssour it self as it looks real clean, or new. my understand is theres 2 hole tht a clip gose in 2, which would keep the tensouer closed while the chain is slip over/on?

many thanks.

Hi t3rra,

Prices you have been quoted are about right. I had a front crank case oil leak in Feb. The oil had also contaminated the belts. I had front crank case seal kit fitted and all belts replaced for £678 at SCOM. I don't need to worry about getting the belts replaced at least for another 4 years or 40,000 miles, whichever comes sooner.

I am unable to carry this type of work out myself due to a) lack of garage space b) lack of tools and c) lack of time with working full time and having 2 young kids.

I don't have any quarms about specialists carry out this kind of work as if I got involved I would probably only make matters worse. I know it's cheaper if you've got the time and skills but we can't be good at everything in this life can we?
