What reasons could there be for a 928 S4 automatic not to go into gear? You move the shift lever but nothing happens.
I'm hoping it's just loss of fluid, although I would have thought you would get some warning of failure before it actually stopped working completely.
I have not seen the car as it's the one I sold in April, but the guy said it won't go into gear.

I thought that, but it was a brand new one.

I'm waiting for him to ring me, he's found a place called Autohaus that are going to come out and look at it, but I told him (in a reply to his email) to speak to me first, I may be able to tell him what is wrong with it.

He's taken it in somewhere and they say the hydraulic oil pump has failed/broken up, and they are rebuilding the gearbox at a repair cost of £2500.....hells bells.
Is this a rare fault? I don't know if there were any warnings of failure.

I would have thought a second hand gearbox would have been a better bet. There's one on ebay at the moment for £400 BIN.

Does anybody have any thoughts on this gearbox failure? Is it possible that the oil pump would break up? Would you get any warning of this failure?

Pic of a typical pump here : http://auto.howstuffworks.com/automatic ... sion12.htm

Loss of pressure I'd guess would be a seal blown out. As boxes age the seals harden & this causes bypass leakage which causes all manner of problems. This is why older boxes fade away rather dying suddenly. It is a Mercedes auto at the end of the day so £2.5K for a rebuilt warrantied box isn't too bad.
