Been a thread running on PH about some cheap tools available at Aldi. Just been to Gillingham Aldi & spent 150 quid

I've just bought these:-

Spot blaster kit with 2kg grit 9.99
3/8 reversible air drill 9.99
Air shear 12.99
Air filter regulator lubricator 11.99
15M wall mounted air hose 39.99
Motorcycle helmet 39.99

The helmet is for the odd track day as a passenger as I hate wearing sweaty helmets.
The air tools all look very similar to screwfix/machine mart etc. & have a 3 year warranty. Didn't buy the air wrench or compressor cos I already have them but a 2.5HP 25L compressor for around 80 quid appeared to be a bargain.
The rest of the stuff for the 150 odd quid was a peace offering for the missus, smoked salmon, cakes etc.

Right so you took the food in & sneaked the air tools into the garage. Don't forget to shred the receipt!!!

What is the spot blaster thing about?

I have been on the Aldi website, but they dont seem to show them.

Sounds like they might have some interesting bits!

A spot blaster is used to sand (media) blast small areas of body work. The blaster has a rubber cup fitted over the delivery nozzle which is pressed up against the offending area of body work and helps to contain the media which is (sometimes) recycled back into the media hopper.

I've seen them but never used one.

No the air tools aren't on the website, dunno why, they do have sets of motorbike clothing, boots etc. which looked good & the helmet is a Caberg helmet which is a decent make & for 40 quid is great!
Yes they now take switch, not credit cards but they never used to.

If your using air tools and sand blasting gear especially, then you'll need a decent compressor with a good output and decent stored capacity. I can't remember the size of the air receiver on my compressor but it delivers air at 100psi (easily) at 14CFM (cubic feet per minute).

The problem is you can't get 14CFM off a 13Amp socket. Mine is a 2.5HP V twin & manages about 9CFM. The only tool I have that can out run the compressor is the shot blasting cab. So every 10 minutes you need to stop & let the compressor catch up. But TBH I normally need to rest my wrists at that point so it isn't too much of an issue.

As an update opened up the filter & lubricator today & was astonished to find it includes a gauge & input & output pipes complete with QR type connectors. Great value became even better for 11.99

Your right about the 13 Amp plug issue. I think my compressor motor is rated at 3 or 4 hp. The power supply is a dedicated 10mm SWA cable from a 35A rated supply on a breaker.

I've got quite a large blasting cabinet and I've never run out of air volume or pressure whilst using it. I've amassed quite a bit of gear now and the vast majority has come from Machine Mart in Leeds. It's 'So so' quality but the price is usually pretty good especially when I buy from them during their VAT free days....

A shot blasting cabinet might be better for me perhaps. I really want something that cleans rust and old paint off parts. One of those should do the job?

Yes Paul, a shot blasting cabinet is really useful for removing rust etc from components, as long as they fit inside the enclosure!

I have two cabinets,both bought from Machine Mart, but the larger of the two is by far the most useful. It is quite large though and takes up a fair amount of space, even in my big garage! It's on legs so that the enclosure is set at the right height to stand in front of and reach forward with your arms into the fixed rubber gauntlets set into the front of the housing. I fixed the legs in mine to a bed plate fitted with robust casters so I can move it around easily.
