Just get an MOT, as unless you take to the place who are going to carry out the MOT there is no point as tests vary too much

Hi,
The only problem with going straight into an MOT centre these days is if it fails its shows straight away on the police computer if they clock your plate even if you have days left on your old MOT

I did not know that! I was just going to go straight to MOT and resolve any advisories. What a disaster that would be if I got caught on the way home. What are the rules if you fail, take it home and drive back to the station later?

If it fails then it should stay at the garage to be repaired “ I would of thought” It’s all done on the computer these days so if it fails that report is on the VOSA data base and wipes out any days you have on the old MOT as its down as a failure.
Worth asking your local MOT station but I have being told in the pass that once failed it in the system date and time.

I still go straight to the MOT centre, but if you think it may fail then its worth checking with the MOT centre first.

A friendly garage will give it a pre-MOT inspection for you for about £30. Then you can sort out any problems whilst it's currently MOT'd.

Also, look out for Hi-Q as they are charging £29 for an MOT if you take the voucher from a local paper. It might not apply in your area, but they only charge £35 anyway.

Hi :)

Sorry a couple of you are wrong...IF it fails an MOT , then assuming you still have some days left on old Mot. its perfectly legal to drive until old MOT expires.......i.e. it is STILL Mot`ed....

All the best Brett :)

If the old test has not run out then it does not matter.

You can drive it home from a test centre even if it has failed, unless its deemed by the test to be unsafe

I don’t agree, if it fails then it’s not fit for the road, the MOT is done on the car condition at the time of the MOT, yes something could go wrong the day after the MOT but its base on the condition on the day its tested.
The MOTs over the last few years are done on the computer, the paper certificate is only for your records and have no value not even to crocks breaking in to garages to steal them. The Post Office even has details of your current MOT and its bang up to date via the VOSA data base so this will replace your old MOT pass. If the Post Office have this info so do the police

Here you go, got this of the web (so it must be right) if it fails it a failure until put right.

MOT Failure Question: A question that is often asked follows:

If car fails MOT is the old test certificate still valid until its expiry date?
Well the answer does not seem to be found on any of the government information about the MOT test, so we emailed VOSA with this question and this is their response:
"An MOT certificate is valid until its expiry date. However if your vehicle fails a test before this date and you do not rectify the defects then you are driving an unroadworthy vehicle which is an offence."
So to put this into context if your car fails the MOT due to illegal tyres then you are driving an unroadworthy vehicle, you were driving unroadworthy vehicle before the MOT, and you will be driving an unroadworthy vehicle until you get a new tyre. Therefore at anytime if caught you would be subject to a £2500 fine and 3 points per illegal tyre.
However once you get a new tyre your car is roadworthy and the old MOT is still valid until its expiry date, thus you can then drive your car again and get it retested to your timescale, with out worrying about driving without an MOT.
This is a very good reason to book your Mot early and give yourself plenty of time to book a retest if needed.

Hi :)

I repeat you are wrong...

One of my best friends owns an MOT testing station and I have been through this in detail with him....

OLD MOT still valid.....legal car... until expiry...EVEN if you fail another MOT before it expires...or for that matter even if you failed 10 MOT`s at different stations.....

If you don`t believe me...go ask ANY MOT tester.....

Of course a bald tyre gets you points and a fine but that has NOTHING to do with this question.....

All the best Brett :)

I really do hate to say this but Brett is right  , of course the chap is also right that if you leave the MOT station with defects on your car you will be breaking the law BUT the MOT testers opinion is often just that an opinion and on many things very subjective which I have always found quite unfair.

VOSA of course rarely show any interest in complaints as they have nothing to gain by backing you, I digress . The fact that if you fail on a bald tyre you are breaking the law to drive out on that bald tyre is nothing to do with the MOT is it , its just as illegal when you drive in , drive past or even visit the local Mc Donalds :drunken:

I think we should all have a punch up over this J.O.K.E ! !

If it failed on a bald tyre it would have been illegal on the way to the test!

My God thats why this countries in such a mess, too much nit picking over small issues & not enough time spent catching the REAL assholes out there.
My point is my car is currently on a SORN MOT already expired so I have to drive to get an MOT. I will be taking it to a Just MOT place where there is no repairs done at garage anyway.
So if it happens to fail what to do with the car?? Leave there & pay for it to be trailered home until I get repairs done, not on your life unless the car is dangerous to drive of course...

Hi :)

The law says , you CAN legally drive with no mot or tax TO a PRE booked MOT.... regarding driving AWAY the law is a little more wooly.....you CAN legally drive after a FAIL.... TO a place that will do the repairs...which CAN include your house.....

Hope this helps :)

All the best Brett :)
