Picked the 928 from finally getting the steering rack sorted after the fun and games surrounding the track rod arms! WOW - Over the moon!!! Feels so good.

Took her straight to the paint shop to get a respray quote and one of the things that came up was the side protector strips. I need new ones and would welcome comments from anyone who has changed theirs. Any hint and tips on where to get them, anything I should get the body shop to do with them etc?

Thanks
Regards
Paul

Unless you're dead set on keeping things stock, most owners prefer to delete the side strips when they are having repaint as it's a smoother look. Check out the early cars which had no such strips.

I have seen a few have deleted the strips, but I want her back as she left the factory.
Quite good protection from morons who open doors in car parks as well!

Hi :)
I think from memory that they are an absolute pig to remove in one piece and are usually unusable afterwards and have to have a special adhesive strip to be reattached, I dont think they are cheap either...

Which I think is why most do the "delete" thing...

Personally I agree about car parks....but it depends on cost....

All the best Brett :)

I will pull mine off when I get a second to see how they are attached. Too late to do it now, and away for a couple of days, so will have a crack Friday.
I cannot find any clips in PET, but there is a reference to a tape. So fingers crossed they are attached with tape.
Someone has just offered me a set, so if price is right I might be sorted.
They are expensive new ... I just had a look and the long ones are about £50+ +vat each but the ends quite a bit less.
I might not need to replace them all, but I know at least two look very tatty.

** Just had an email saying clips can be bought .... just cant find them on PET.

Hi :)

Don`t forget that if you replace with new they WILL need spraying in colour, and may need special preparation, speak to your sprayer about them as I do not know much about spraying but I doubt whatever they are made of will be sprayed the same as ally or steel....

All the best Brett :)

Hi Brett,
Agree they need something different I think, but the guy who is doing the respray has owned x2 928's so knows them quite well and we discussed the side strips. I will highlight again to him though just in case!

Regards
Paul

Watchcam, i'm interested to know if the new rack has reduced or eliminated any play or "slack", around the straight ahead in the steering? When i bought my car there was definitely some but this was reduced by correcting the tracking/alignment. I mentioned this to Paul Anderson and he offered that it was part of driving a car that is nearly 25 years old. Improving and replacing different components to sharpen up the handling is one of the many things on the fateful "list".

Thanks,

RB

Looks like they are held on by "bushes" and tape, bush number 92855928102 on PET

Car set of strips is expensive, about £400 plus vat

Hi Risky,

It has made a huge difference. It feels very taught, with no movement and really good feedback through the wheel.
I had already changed the upper column bearing which also made a night and day difference. If that bearing is in good order there should be no movement in the wheel at all.
I have to add my steering was in a complete state before I had this work done!

Regards
Paul

Thanks on the bushes I had got confused. Thought it was an side indicator on the drawing.
Expensive arent they?
Been offered some good ones that have been removed without damage, but I need to check which ones if not all need replacing.

Trying to keep costs to a minimum with the new calipers being done next week and respray this month as well all being well.

Decided to change the pads when the calipers are done, but not the discs as they are in good order. Can always do them myself in the future if I feel the need.
After all that going to tackle the electric gremlins :-)

Regards
Paul
