I would like to make this post to apologise to my beautiful 1989 944 for asking her to take me to work every day during this God awful weather whilst my 987 sits in a nice warm garage due to the fact that it is cr*p with even one flake of snow. The old lady starts every time and just keeps on going through the snow. Thank you.

Glad to hear it is OK. Big problem is the snow & the salt used to clear it, make sure when this clears it gets a good underbody wash & lots of rustproofing.

Thanks, have been thinking about a pro waxoyle treatment, has anybody done this and is it worth the cost.

Ive bought a load of dinitrol to do exactly this. Not quite sure how I'm going to give the underside a good cleaning yet though!

Local authority has ring fenced all the salt in Kent, no one is allowed to sell it to you. Still not putting any on the bloody roads, M25 was shocking this morning.

Funnily enough, I have a client up here who is a salt wholesaler. He buys from around the world, ships it to UK ports, stockpiles, blends and sells.

After the cold snap at the start of last year, I put together sales material for him to send to all local Councils up and down the UK explaining how low on salt the country was and how much they should each order to ensure that they could deal with the Met Office's projections for winter 09/10.

Looks like the Councils didn’t pay much attention. They’re paying for it now.

My client, on the other hand, is sitting on a pile of money where his stockpiled salt used to be. He’s sold out completely.

If his Council customers had bothered to preorder appropriate amounts of salt, they’d have imported more accordingly.

It's no better up here. Sheet ice everywhere. My Porsche was doing a fair impression of an igloo. Left it were it was & skated off for a train. Only 8 of us made it to work on time out of 100 odd. Worst day this year without any sign of a gritter.

For washing off salt I use a long handled rose sprinkler attachment to the hose - less violent than my heavy duty Karcher jet wash ....
Then its a matter of ramps or whatever - I saw some that had a shallow two stage ramp for low slung underneaths .... not forgetting a LONG drive afterwards to dry it all out!

But it is said that Dinitrol is best - just need to have the ambient temp high enough for a smooth flow.

The one that wins all the awards is the product made by Bilt Hamber. I have a 5 litre can at home which is in the garage. Great place assuming the car is outside under several inches of snow!

Why the apology??? I'm using my '89 944 S2 in this weather. I'm impressed that the car is blowing out hot air from the vents by the time I've driven 1/2 mile. I love my '44 and do my best to keep her looking nice, shiney and rust free, but a garage queen she ain't. She's my daily driver. When we had a break in the crap weather the other day, I was actually able to open the taps full and I was suprised at the level of acceleration. Even I'd forgotten how good the '44 is after all the 'easy does it' and starting off in 2nd gear all the time.

Unfortunately, my auto socks are stuck in a container somewhere in Europe. Soon as I've got those, I won't be slip sliding so much on the side roads.

its something i am looking at providing - chassis and suspension steam clean and dinitrol treatment...

So how good are these auto socks? Are they better than chains and better than winter tyres?My S2 is crap on snow ( Falken 452 s which seemed good in the dry and wet when the temp is warm )
